PLANTS
It is difficult to give concise information about plant toxicities as there are hundreds of plants that are potentially poisonous to animals . However, actual reports of animals getting seriously ill from eating plants are relatively infrequent compared to reports of poisonings from household products or drugs. The plants discussed below can be found in Minnesota and represent among the most dangerous of poisonous plants. You may notice the conspicuous lack of "holiday plants" among the list. While many people seem to think poinsettias, ivy and mistletoe are dangerous plants, and while these plants have toxic potential, they seldom cause serious clinical signs if eaten. It is worth noting here that dogs and cats often vomit after chewing on plants; this probably does not represent "poisoning" or any dangerous exposure. Only severe or persistent vomiting is a danger sign in small animals. Sporadic vomiting without accompanying signs of illness (for instance, diarrhea, depression, loss of appetite) is rarely a cause for worry, whether associated with plant ingestion or not. The best advice, however, is to contact your veterinarian if you have specific concerns. JAPANESE YEW XXX Taxus cuspidus

    Mission Statement
21st Century Animal Resource and Education Services combats pet overpopulation, abuse and neglect by delivering humane education programs to school-aged children and promoting awareness among people of all ages about how to live with and behave responsibly toward companion animals, other animals, and, by extension, each other. Millions of dollars are spent each year in this country managing the consequences of our mistreatment of animals. 21st Century C.A.R.E.S. takes a different approach, striking at the causes of such mistreatment, instead of trying to mitigate the effects. We believe it is better to attack the twin diseases of ignorance and apathy than to try to cope with the disregard for fellow creatures that is their most prevalent symptom. We do this through education and empowerment. Core Beliefs That the problems of abuse, neglect and overpopulation of companion animals are solvable in our lifetimes.

Animal charities solicit dollars from pet lovers
Help with making informed choices
As holiday season draws closer, charities prepare for the end-of-the year push to fatten their coffers with tax deductible donations. Animal charities join the rush; they send packets offering greeting cards and other merchandise accompanied by letters and photos highlighting unspeakable cruelties that can be corrected only by donating to their organization. The pictures sway the hearts and minds, but dog owners need more than images to help determine where their charity dollars are best spent. So, how to choose? When dog owners donate to a charity devoted to improving the lives of dogs, they do so because they love their pets, not because they want their dollars channeled into a fund-raising loop or used to finance political agendas. Several charity watchdog groups have emerged to help donors wend their way through the maze before writing a check. The Council of Better Business Bureaus Philanthropic Advisory Service and the National Charities Information Bureau combined forces to found www.give.org, a charity watchdog service that rates most national and many local organizations that solicit donations. Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org) is an online service that rates the financial health of more than 2000 charities. The American Institute of Philanthropy publishes a charity guide that can be purchased through www.charitywatch.org, and the Federal Trade Commission provides tips for donors and handles complaints about charities.

This poor beagle was found after hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans. Thank goodness for the people at Pasado's Safe Haven for getting him the help he needed just in time. They think he will survive. The CCSPCA has started a Disaster Relief Fund for our area of the Central Coast. You never know when disaster may strike and we plan to be prepared to meet the challenge head on. A generous donation of a trailer was made to us a few months ago, and we will be converting it into our very own Emergency Rescue Vehicle. We will be completely outfitting it with kennels in order to facilitate animal rescue, along with a self-contained vet exam table, and a larger refrigerator to hold medicine. We will be preparing ourselves with first-aid courses and emergency response training as an ongoing part of our organization. In order to be prepared to help the most innocent of all victims in a small emergency to a catastrophic event, we are asking for donations to prepare for it. When donating to this fund please specify "Disaster Relief Fund" and send your contribution to: CCSPCA, P.O. Box 2952,Orcutt, CA 93457. (tax deductible Fed. ID#20-0294474) There are many organizations and rescue groups that still need your financial support to continue their efforts in saving animals from Hurricane Katrina. They are asking for monetary help at this point so that they may purchase items as needed and not have to wait for shipments. We ask that you contribute to these groups directly: The Humane Society of the United States at: www.hsus.org; the ASPCA at: www.aspca.org; and Pasado's Safe Haven at: www.pasadosafehaven.org/NEWS/NEWS.htm
