The Comoros Islands
With a rich and varied vegetation, they are the major producer of the world's perfume essences, processed from the blossoms of ylang-ylang, jasmine and orange, hence the name "Les Iles Parfumées".
The Comoros are also famous for the prehistoric deep sea fish known as the coelacanthe, thought to be long extinct, but discovered earlier this century in these waters.
Mayotte
The French island of Mayotte is the oldest and most southerly of the Comoros. Encircled by a coral reef forming the world's largest lagoon, with a spectacular and exotic underwater world, its glorious interior is of volcanic peaks, thundering waterfalls, dense jungle and lush plantations. The colonial atmosphere of the capital, Mamoudzou, is distinctly French and here you can sample delicious fresh seafood at a local restaurant or admire the superb crafts of the Comorean artisans.
Anjouan
Anjouan, the OScented Isle¹ is the most densely populated island in the archipelago. In the capital, Moutsamoudou, you can see 17th century houses with intricately carved doors, twisting alleyways, mosques and a citadel. From the point of view of the landscape and culture it is probably the most interesting of the islands. Not only is the Arab influence most in evidence here, its deep valleys, waterfalls, profusion of lakes, lovingly-tended plantations and beautiful beaches make the island unforgettable.

  • Culture, gender and development Whiteness Cedaw in the arab world: an international yet unbinding treaty?
This issue of In Brief looks at connections between culture, gender and development. The lead article discusses how 'gender and development' can be seen as an imposition on other cultures, how far this is a reality, and what we can do about it. The second article on 'whiteness' calls for examining white people's cultures in order to combat racism in development. Finally, an article on the CEDAW treaty and the reservations by Arab state signatories, shows how arguments about defending culture can be mobilised to obstruct gender equality. This issue is part of Bridge's forthcoming Cutting Edge Pack on Culture. Culture, Gender and Development Gender and Development - Imposing western ideas on other cultures? 'In my work in India, I was operating in my own society and culture, and so was speaking as an 'insider'. Despite this, it was in my work for gender equity that I most often experienced allegations from different quarters that this work was against our culture, violated our traditions, and the worst criticism of all in the Indian context, that it was 'Westernised'. Comoros Africa
CULTURE The Comoros has hospitals on each of the main islands but suffers from a shortage of medical personnel, modern facilities, and supplies. Comorians largely depend on traditional medicines and healers. Those who have more advanced health problems and can afford to do so seek medical assistance in either Madagascar or France. While infant mortality has decreased and life expectancy has increased to about 60 years on average, there are still several growing health concerns. Less than half of the population has access to safe drinking water, making cholera and parasitic infestation prominent. Other serious illnesses are malaria, tuberculosis, and, to a lesser extent, leprosy and AIDS.
