The islands were ceded to the French in 1841. They became a French protectorate in 1886 before being formally adopted as colonial possessions in 1912. The Comoros were then governed as part of Madagascar until 1947 when they became a separate French Overseas Territory. Government Following the military coup of May 1999, the existing 1996 constitution and the Federal Assembly were suspended. A new constitution allowing for greater autonomy and individual elected administrations on each of the islands was introduced in 2002. Executive power is in the hands of the President, who is elected for a 6-year term. There is no legislature at present.

Moroni - Culture Communities on the islands are mentioned in ancient documents. Domoni, one of these communities, for example, was described as a major trading center in the fifteenth century with trade contacts in Africa and Asia. We know from archaeological evidence that it traded with places as far away as Japan. After the Portuguese appeared in the Indian Ocean and before the opening of the Suez Canal, many European and American vessels stopped in the islands for supplies. Today, the Comoros are "Islands in a Forgotten Sea" with the prospects and problems many small countries in the world are experiencing. The highest point on the islands is the summit of Kartala, an active volcano on Njazidja (Grand Comore) Island, which is 2361m (7746 ft) above sea level. The Comoros climate is tropical with a monsoon season from November to April. The range of annual rainfall is from 109 to 551 cm (43 to 217 in); there are frequent cyclones. The people of the islands are of mixed descent: African, Arab and Malagasy. Although Arabic and French are the official languages, the primary spoken tongue is the Comorian dialect of Swahili.

Moroni - History The Comoros Islands were very likely inhabited by Malayo-Polynesian sailors as early as the sixth century AD. Arabs and Africans were later arrivals. For hundreds of years, the islands were a centre for traffic in slaves and spices. Between the 10th and 15th centuries, people from the areas around the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf came to the islands and established Islam. These people set up rival sultanates and while no political stability or unity was achieved, Islam gave the people homogeneity and it has subsequently dominated all aspects of the islands' social life. The present culture of the Comoros is very similar to that of the Swahili people on the African coast from Somalia to Mozambique. Because of rival sultanates on the islands, in the nineteenth century France was able to exploit the situation and establish a presence. In 1886 the Comoros became a French protectorate and in 1912 France officially proclaimed them colonies. Until the 1960s the islands were more or less totally isolated from the world. France maintained a situation which forbade political organisation and a local press. In December 1961, however, in response to increased demands from the people of the islands, a system of internal autonomy was set up

The Arab influence on Zanzibar and Pemba islands is evident in the people, who are a mix of Shirazia (from Persia), Arabs, Comorians (from the Comoros Islands) and Bantu from the mainland, though the latter predominate.
Asians are a significant minority especially in the towns and cities. Europeans (either by descent or expatriate) are a smaller minority.
The island of origin of the locals pretty much determines what tribe they belong to. The Waunguja would emanate from Unguja Island, with Wapemba tribe from Pemba Island and Watumbatu from Tumbato Island.

Services including tourism, construction, and commercial activities constitute the remainder of the GDP. Plantations engage a large proportion of the population in producing the islands' major cash crops for export: vanilla, cloves, perfume essences, and copra. Comoros is the world's leading producer of essence of ylang-ylang, used in manufacturing perfume. It also is the world's second-largest producer of vanilla. Principal food crops are coconuts, bananas, and cassava. Foodstuffs constitute 32% of total imports. ... Romantic the name may be, but the Comoros, an archipelago of four large islands halfway between the coast of East Africa and the northern tip of the island of Madagascar, has a most unsavoury reputation in the last three decades. With 600,000 people squeezed onto 2170 sq km, the Comoros are a very small and crowded island chain, perhaps with more coups per capita per year than any country in the world. Since independence from France in 1975, no less than twenty coups or attempted coups d’etat had occurred, with the first coup occurring less than one month after independence. The first two presidents were brutally killed in coups, and South Africa-backed white mercenaries ruled the country behind the presidential throne for much of 1970’s and 1980’s. Political and natural disasters continue to plague the country, till this very day.

It is thought that the earliest inhabitants of the islands were journeymen from Indonesia-Polynesia, but traces of this original Asian culture have blended seamlessly into successive waves of African, Arab and Shirazi immigrants. The most notable of these early immigrants were the Shirazi Arab royal clans, who appeared in Comoros in the 15th and 16th centuries and stayed to build mosques, set up royal house and introduce architecture and carpentry. In 1529 the French Parmentier brothers popped in for a visit, but the first reliable European accounts of this part of the world came from the Portuguese explorers, Diego Dias and Ferdinand Soares. The Portuguese failed to capitalise on being the first to reach the islands, and for the next century or two the islands were used only as a pit stop during voyages up and down the coast of East Africa. In fact, up until the middle of the 19th century, it was not European explorers but pirates from Madagascar who caused the biggest headaches. During this time the number of sultans mushroomed at an alarming rate, and at one stage there were no fewer than 12 sultans on the island of Grande Comore alone. This is one sultan per 100 sq km (39 sq mi), or, put another way, three squabbling sultans per New York City, which, in anybody's language, is two sultans too many.
