People's Democracy or Capitalist Democracy?
That is the issue at stake in British Columbia and Canada as a whole! Since the birth of Canada, with few exceptions, two political parties have exchanged the seats of government... the Grits and the Tories... Liberals and Conservatives. From time to time, matters of substance have arisen between these two parties but in the main, they pursued the same policies and danced to the tune of the same drummer: capitalism Has there been any progress in the last 138 years? Of course there has. But it's owed to the struggle waged by workers, farmers and other democratically-minded Canadians, many of whom gave their lives to these struggles for democratic and social reform. The problem is there's not enough money in the pot to serve the needs of capital in today's technological competitive world and to meet the needs of capital as well. Capitalism has become "out of date." The "profit motive" is no longer able to rule humankind. Anew system is required to manage the world —

Political Parties
Dominican Republic Table of Contents Political parties and a political party system in the modern sense had a very short history in the Dominican Republic, dating back only to the early 1960s. Most parties were weakly organized, had weak and inexperienced political leadership, were neither very ideological nor programmatic, and were generally based on personalistic followings rather than on concrete programs. Beginning in the mid-1960s, two main parties, or movements, had dominated Dominican politics. These were the PRD and the Reformist Party (Partido ReformistaPR). Both these parties had gone through several reorganizations. The PRD had been founded in 1939 by exiles from the Trujillo dictatorship. It functioned as an exiled organization for twentytwo years, before returning to the Dominican Republic in 1961 after Trujillo's assassination. In the late 1980s, the PRD was a left-of-center, democratic political party. Strongly oriented toward social justice, it sought to assist peasants and workers. Although nationalistic, the PRD belonged to the Socialist International. Its platform supported both political and economic democracy. A strongly reformist party, the PRD nonetheless was committed to implementing change through democratic means. On the strength of this program, the PRD, led by the charismatic Juan Bosch, had won the 1962 election, the freest in the country's history, by a two-to-one margin. Bosch was overthrown, however, after only seven months in office. The PRD organized a constitutionalist revolt, in 1965, aimed at restoring democratic government, but the revolution was put down militarily by the United States, an action that made Bosch and many PRD leaders bitterly resentful of the United States. Perceived as a symbol of instability and revolution, Bosch lost the 1966 election to Balaguer. For the next twelve years, the PRD went into eclipse; it functioned primarily as the Dominican Republic's largest opposition party. After a major split, Bosch left to form his own, more radical, PLD.

Belarus Table of Contents Stanislaw Shushkyevich observed at the beginning of 1993 that almost 60 percent of Belarusians did not support any political party, only 3.9 percent of the electorate backed the communist party, and only 3.8 percent favored the BPF. The influence of other parties was much lower. The Communist Party of Belarus (CPB), part of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), claimed to rule the Belorussian SSR in the name of the proletariat for the entire duration of the republic's existence. For most of this period, it sought to control all aspects of government and society and to infuse political, economic, and social policies with the correct ideological content. By the late 1980s, however, the party watched as Mikhail S. Gorbachev attempted to withdraw the CPSU from day-to-day economic affairs. After the CPB was banned in the wake of the August 1991 coup d'état, Belarusian communists regrouped and renamed themselves the Party of Communists of Belarus (PCB), which became the umbrella organization for Belarus's communist parties and proRussian groups. The PCB was formally registered in December 1991. The Supreme Soviet lifted the ban on the CPB in February 1993. The most active and visible of the opposition political groups in Belarus in the first half of the 1990s was the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF), founded in October 1989 with Zyanon Paznyak as chairman. The BPF declared itself a movement open to any individual or party, including communists, provided that those who joined shared its basic goal of a fully independent and democratic Belarus. The BPF's critics, however, claimed that it was indeed a party, pointing out the movement's goal of seeking political power, having a "shadow cabinet," and being engaged in parliamentary politics.

support in Ukraine's parliamentary elections by Roman Woronowycz
Kyiv Press Bureau KYIV - The Communist Party of Ukraine won a convincing victory in elections to the Verkhovna Rada on March 29, finishing well ahead of the Rukh Party as well as Ukraine's political center. Although political pundits are predicting that the results of Ukraine's second democratically held parliamentary elections since independence in 1991 will change little in the composition and the paralysis of the 450-member Verkhovna Rada, even political opponents to the Communists agree that their victory was stronger than foreseen. "What would you expect when wages, pensions and stipends are not paid out?" asked Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma at a press conference with Finland's president on March 30. "We should get on our knees and thank the pensioners who limited the extent to which they voted the way they did." Pensioners, as predicted, along with residents of rural areas and citizens of Crimea overwhelmingly supported the Communists. President Kuchma also criticized those who had supported the mixed election system law by which these elections were run and those political centrists who could not find room for compromise to form a united center. "(The election results) will come as a cold shower to many politicians," said Mr. Kuchma.

Aspects of political change in post-communist Poland Following the triumph of Solidarity forces and the rapid progress made towards the dismantling of the communist regime in 1989, Poland's subsequent political development and its success in moving towards the establishment of a stable democratic order have tended to be viewed in a problematic light. When fully competitive parliamentary elections were held in October 1991 it was argued that the parties which contested them were weak, fragmented, ill equipped to sustain effective goveRNment and poor at presenting themselves to the electorate.[1] Major reservations have been expressed about the development of a `deep and dangerous political crisis' in Poland and the view propounded that Poland's transitional institutions `now seemed to lag behind developments elsewhere in EasteRN Europe'.[2]

Agudat Israel (Society of Israel)
A clericalist political party of ultra-Orthodox Jews, founded in Poland in 1912 and established in Palestine in the early 1920s. In 1949 it formed part of the United Religious Front ( q.v. ); in 1955 and 1959 it joined Poalei Agudat Israel to form the Torah Religious Front ( q.v. ). Originally anti- Zionist and messianic, in the 1980s this non-Zionist party, together with its Council of Torah Sages, still favored a theocracy and increased state financial support for its religious institutions.
Ahdut HaAvoda (Unity of Labor)
The party, founded in 1919 as successor to Poalei Tziyyon ( q.v. ), had three separate existences: from 1919 to 1930, when it merged with HaPoel HaTzair ( q.v. ) to form Mapai ( q.v. ); in 1944 its name was taken over by Siah B (Bet Faction B), a faction that split from Mapai and formed a new party with HaKibbutz HaMeuhad (United Kibbutz Movement); and the last beginning in 1954 when Ahdut HaAvoda was reconstituted by the HaKibbutz HaMeuhad faction when it broke off from Mapam ( q.v.

The Impact of the Repeated Elections on the Political Parties in Moldova by Timur Onica The recent Local elections left open the doors to the top office of the Moldovan Capital City. It seems the 11-year presence of Serafim Urechean has been a steady comfort for the citizens of Chisinau. 05 percent turnout did not keep the former in place, nor did it bring a substitute. The latest developments clear up that the substitute is far from coming. The insufficient turnout has had important consequences on the election process. The current challenges spurred the remaining competitors to popularize the elections, redefine their positions and adopt new winning strategies. The pre-emptive victory of the Communist candidate: Zinaida Greceanii with her 50.15 % record and the 30% handicap over the quasi-independent runner-up: Dumitru Braghis in the July 10 elections round has had a tranquilizing effect on the second election campaign of all candidates. The scarce television appearances of all candidates, except for Zinaida Greceanii clears that the sole objective of the Communist Party is to touch the validating turnout threshold. It seems all candidates agree that if the threshold is met on July 24, the Communist Party will get the office of Mayor of Chisinau. That fact explains the content of the second election campaign performed by the Communist Party: herding the people out to vote. A special attention was drawn towards the youth.
