Publication Search Publications in the "On Distributed Communications" Series An electrical engineer by training, Paul Baran worked for Hughes Aircraft Company's systems group before joining RAND in 1959. While working at RAND on a scheme for U.S. telecommunications infrastructure to survive a "first strike," Baran conceived of the Internet and digital packet switching , the Internet's underlying data communications technology. His concepts are still employed today; just the terms are different. His seminal work first appeared in a series of RAND studies published between 1960 and 1962 and then finally in the tome "On Distributed Communications," published in 1964. Since the early 1970s as an entrepreneur and private investor, Baran has founded or co-founded several high-tech telecommunications firms. He is currently chairman and co-founder of Com21, Inc., a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of cable TV modems for high-speed, high-bandwidth Internet access. He is also a co-founder of the Institute for the Future. Baran holds several patents and has received numerous professional honors including an honorary doctorate from his alma mater Drexel University (BS '49). He has a master's degree in engineering from UCLA.

NYSERNet Timothy Lance, President and Chairman Two words summarize NYSERNet, one of the Internet’s enduring partnerships: “bold,” and “first.” In 1985, realizing that New York’s research institutions needed to reach NSFNet, then under development, their representatives decided to form a new corporation, and proposed building a statewide network to do so. As Dr. Steve Wolff, then head of the NSFNet program, wrote years later, this proposal “caused a major paradigm shift at NSF. Instead of funding institutional connections to supercomputer centers, the NSF shifted to funding connections of ‘cohesive’ regional networks. ... NSFNET is not a network. It is an internetwork- i.e., a network of networks, which are organizationally and technically autonomous but which interoperate with one another." The resulting NYSERNet backbone marked the Internet protocol’s first deployment on a statewide basis, also its first use outside of Federal government control. NYSERNet co-developed SNMP, a network management protocol now globally employed, created the first 24 by 7 network operation center, the first Internet training center, and, when it spun off PSI, the first commercial ISP. For several years NYSERNet managed the Defense Department’s DARPANET test bed. All the while NYSERNet deployed ever faster research networks, becoming the first regional to implement such emerging tools as native IPv6 and multicast.
