Tor: An anonymous Internet communication system
Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features. Your traffic is safer when you use Tor, because communications are bounced around a distributed network of servers, called onion routers . Instead of taking a direct route from source to destination, data packets on the Tor network take a random pathway through several servers that cover your tracks so no observer at any single point can tell where the data came from or where it's going. This makes it hard for recipients, observers, and even the onion routers themselves to figure out who and where you are. Tor's technology aims to provide Internet users with protection against "traffic analysis," a form of network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Traffic analysis is used every day by companies, governments, and individuals that want to keep track of where people and organizations go and what they do on the Internet. Instead of looking at the content of your communications, traffic analysis tracks where your data goes and when, as well as how much is sent. For example, online advertising companies like Fastclick and Doubleclick use traffic analysis to record what web pages you've visited, and can build a profile of your interests from that. A pharmaceutical company could use traffic analysis to monitor when the research wing of a competitor visits its website, and track what pages or products that interest the competitor. IBM hosts a searchable patent index, and it could keep a list of every query your company makes. A stalker could use traffic analysis to learn whether you're in a certain Internet cafe.

Towards an analytical framework Search Home About WNSP WNSP's work ... Members
The past two decades have demonstrated the growing strength of the global women’s movement in advocating issues of women’s equality and empowerment. Among these issues is that of women’s marginalization and invisibility in all aspects of technology. There exists an array of literature that speaks to this topic. It began in the early 1980s with research into the effects of new technologies on women’s jobs and developed into debates about the gender gap in technology. Most of this information is inaccessible, yet much of it is critically important to women’s efforts to inform decision-making and guide actions
This paper presents a range of perspectives on gender and information and communication technology (ICT) drawn from a review of the literature. The aim is to present some of the major debates and critiques of ICT to highlight some important issues of concern for women. It also provides an analytical framework from which to view women’s global participation in, need for and critique of computer networking. The framework builds on an initial one developed for a research study undertaken by the Association for Progressive Communications’ Women’s Networking Support Programme on women’s global networking by incorporating more international perspectives into the discussion, and highlighting some issues and observations specific to women working in ICT.

History of the Communication Discipline
... Endnotes A DESCRIPTION OF COMMUNICATION What is Communication? Communication is a learned skill. Most people are born with the physical ability to talk , but we learn to speak well and communicate effectively. Speaking, listening, and our ability to understand verbal and nonverbal meanings are skills we develop in various ways. We learn basic communication skills by observing other people and modeling our behaviors based on what we see. We also are taught some communication skills directly through education, and by practicing those skills and having them evaluated. Communication as an academic field relates to all the ways we communicate, so it embraces a large body of knowledge. The information relates to both verbal and nonverbal messages. A body of scholarship all about communication is presented and explained in textbooks, electronic publications, and academic journals. In the journals, researchers report the results of studies that are the basis for an ever-expanding understanding of how we all communicate.

Barcelona, Spain, March 1-3, 2006
Description
Telecommunication infrastructures play a vital role in modern society. The advancements in the range of network service offerings, their performance, quality of service, security, and ubiquity are relentless, despite global economy fluctuations. The demand for high bandwidth network infrastructures is continuously growing within both academic and industrial sectors.
Grid computing is one of the many examples of the new emerging paradigm of networking characterized by huge data traffic flows, that require an extremely high-performance network infrastructure. The need of high speed is emerging also in mobile, wireless network environments, where new wireless technologies promise data rates above 100 Mbps. Other high bandwidth network examples include community access networks, on demand optical networks and the Next Generation Internet.
