Research Paper - “The Exclusive, Universal, and Multiple Experiences of ADC” By James A. Houck, Ph.D “Please don’t think I’m crazy, but…” is how most conversations typically begin around the subject of After Death Communication (ADC). Most of the research in this area has been done from a qualitative (e.g., structured interviews) approach, which is an excellent way for people to begin telling their stories and comparing similar experiences with other bereft people. Yet, are there others ways to statistically measure the frequency and uniqueness of such experiences? In other words, are ADC’s random or purposeful to specific types of populations or bereavement groups?

Prosody Research at Bell Labs
Prosody: The study of the metrical structure of verse. More generally, prosody is the part of human communication that is not captured by the sequence of words.
  • Prosody: emphasis and intonation of speech. Pitch, amplitude, and spectral slope. Under-articulated vs. over-articulated phonemes. Short vs. long phonemes. Even raised eyebrows and shrugs. Prosody is used to mark important concepts. It marks beginnings and endings, and gives other speakers permission to take the floor. It marks questions. It carries emotional content. It has other, poorly understood, functions.
The research is important scientifically, as we have little hard knowledge about what information people communicate via prosody, and how it is done. The research also can shed light on basic questions like "How much of language is fixed by our anatomy, and how much is cultural?" and "How much of language is consciously accessible?"

Countdown for the release of the new Internet Report: The purpose of the April 2005 retreat was to help the Annenberg School frame a major new initiative looking at the ways in which on-line communities are changing the fabric of our social, political and economic lives, and to plan the research, courses, events and outreach of this program.
During the retreat, participants focused on current on-line communities and examined how they evolved and are different from off-line communities. Sessions looked in detail at existing communities (Friendster, craigslist, for example) and, through discussion with their leaders and organizers, helped participants gain an understanding of the unique role of the on-line world. The final session focused on the role that USC Annenberg will play in moving from the retreat to establishing an international research and educational program in On-Line Communities in the Digital Age.
Retreat attendees included founders and CEO's of major on-line communities, including Craig Newmark, founder, Craig's List; Jonathan Abrams, founder and chairman, Friendster; Omar Wasow, executive director, BlackPlanet.com, and Howard Rheingold, rheingold.com
The Center was founded on the belief that the best communication policy flows from high-quality and rigorous research on the structure and impact of mass media and new technology.
