Distinguish between comets, asteroids, meteors, and meteorites. S6E1f.Describe the characteristics of comets, asteroids, and meteors.
http://gpc.edu/~pgore/Earth&Space/GPS/comets.html
Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors
Dr. Pamela Gore
Georgia Perimeter College
Objectives
  • Distinguish between comets, asteroids, meteors, and meteorites.
  • Discuss the three main types of meteorites.
  • Describe the orbit of a comet, and the orientation of the comet's tail.
  • Describe the orbit of asteroids.
  • Explain the significance of Apollo objects. This section addresses, in whole or in part, the following Georgia GPS standard(s):
    • S6E1f. Describe the characteristics of comets, asteroids, and meteors.
This section addresses, in whole or in part, the following Benchmarks for Scientific Literacy:
    • Large numbers of chunks of rock orbit the sun. Some of those that the earth meets in its yearly orbit around the sun glow and disintegrate from friction as they plunge through the atmosphere-and sometimes impact the ground. Other chunks of rocks mixed with ice have long, off-center orbits that carry them close to the sun, where the sun's radiation (of light and particles) boils off frozen material from their surfaces and pushes it into a long, illuminated tail.
This section addresses, in whole or in part, the following National Science Education Standards:
  • 76. Review Of Comets And Meteors
This page contains a review of _Comets and Meteors_ by Isaac Asimov.
    http://homepage.mac.com/jhjenkins/Asimov/Books/Book134.html
Books Stories Comets and Meteors Book 134 Astronomy How Did We Find Out the Earth Is Round? The Sun Publisher’s blurb If you look at the sky on a clear night, you may see a comet or meteor. A comet will appear as a small, faint cloud with a streak of light stretching out from one side. A meteor will look like a glowing object streaking across the sky. One of today’s finest science writers tells about these two fascinating astronomical topics in an easy-to-read text. Besides describing the physical characteristics and the well-known sightings of comets and meteors, Dr. Asimov clearly and concisely defines such related terms as meteorite, fireball, solar wind, and asteroid. This Beginning Science book is published under the supervision of educators and technical authorities. Some seven year olds and most eight year olds will be able to read it with no assistance. For younger readers, a list of words that may be difficult is included. Young astronomers will find this book with its color artwork and up-to-date photographs a helpful introduction to the study of comets and meteors. Review This is one of two books by Asimov bearing this title and is part of the Follett series of short astronomy books for very, very young children which started with

Comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) was the one of the best comets of all time. On its way towards perihelion, Comet Hyakutake passed within 0.1 AU of Earth on 1996 March 25.3 UT. This is the closest approach of a comet since 1983. The comet was large and bright for a few days close to this date, sporting a tail about 40 degrees long. A totally unforgetable sight.

About comets, meteors, and meteorites history, numbers, size, information and more.
COMETS AND METEORS There are said to be 2 million comets in the solar system. The most famous, Halley's Comet, was last seen when it brushed earth in May, 1910. It will next be seen by earthlings in 1986. Sizzling hot meteorssome huge fireballs, others mere specksbombard earth's atmosphere at the rate of one million an hour. Only about 150 meteors a year break into earth's atmosphere and survive to hit the surface of the earth. Those that make it are called meteorites. The largest meteorite ever found on earth was one that landed at Hoba West in Southwest Africa. It weighed 132,000 lbs.
