Overview of asteroids, comets, meteors. Images, data, links.

Small Bodies
The title The Nine Planets is somewhat misleading. In addition to the planets and their satellites the solar system contains a large number of smaller but interesting objects. There are thousands of known asteroids and comets and undoubtedly many more unknown ones. Most asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter . A few (e.g. 2060 Chiron) are farther out. There are also some asteroids whose orbits carry them closer to the Sun than the Earth (Aten, Icarus, Hephaistos). Most comets have highly elliptical orbits which spend most of their time in the outer reaches of the solar system with only brief passages close to the Sun. The distinction between comets and asteroids is somewhat controversial . The main distinction seems to be that comets have more volatiles and more elliptical orbits. But there are interesting ambiguous cases such as 2060 Chiron (aka 95 P/Chiron) and 3200 Phaethon and the Kuiper Belt objects which seem to share some aspects of both categories. Asteroids are sometimes also referred to as minor planets or planetoids (not to be confused with "lesser planets" which refers to Mercury and Pluto ). Very small rocks orbiting the

This represents the view from mid-northern latitudes at about 2:00 a.m. local time around November 19. Because of Earth's rotation, this view will roughly be the same for every mid-northern latitude location in the world. The red line across the bottom of the image represents the horizon. What are comets, asteroids, meteors meteorites? comets emit gases and have icymaterial inside or on their surfaces. Their orbits are much more elongated
    http://www.sciencenet.org.uk/astron/comet/whatcomet.html
    What are comets asteroids
An asteroid is an irregular, rocky body smaller and much less massive than a planet. About 1 million are thought to exist in the asteroid belt but only about 200 have diameters greater than 100 km. Asteroids tend to have nearly circular orbits, so that the vast majority of them are found in the region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The names of asteroids are suggested by their discoverer, originally the names of goddesses were used, but now many different names are used such as names of relatives (usually female), names of cities, countries, rivers, famous people, and even observatories, telescopes or computers that assisted in the new discovery.
Meteors and meteorites are essentially the same thing. Meteors are what we know as shooting stars, if one of these showers hits the ground it is renamed a meteorite. Most meteorites / meteors are stony and the two most abundant elements are silicon and oxygen, but most meteorites also contain a small amount of the metals iron and nickel. Meteor streams are simply the debris left behind in the inner Solar System by comets. As the comet heats up close to the Sun, ice and dust on its surface boil off into space, and not held by the comet's weak gravity so get left behind. A meteor shower results each time the Earth crosses through the region of the comet's orbit.

    Teacher Lesson Plans
Do You Know Your Comets from Your Meteors? Objective The student will classify phrases as describing meteors, meteoroids, and comets. Background Meteors are streaks of light in the sky caused by bits of comet dust disintegrating in our atmosphere. Cometary dust particles are called meteoroids. The streak of light is called a meteor. Meteoroids are typically very small and light. They are smaller than grains of sand and weigh even less. Comets are balls of dirty mineral-laden ice that orbit the sun. They are about the size of asteroids. When comets pass close to the sun, they begin to evaporate and leave behind a trail of gas and dust. The dusty trail, also called a meteoroid stream, also orbits the sun. When the earth passes through a stream of meteoroids, we have a meteor shower. Materials The student will need a copy of the article (for younger kids or older kids ) and of the activity sheet (for younger kids or older kids ). There are also answer keys (for younger kids or older kids ). There is also a
