teaching Columbus Day
Today when I picked Damian up from school, he greeted me eagerly with: "We did a BIG art project today!" as he unfurled said art project, a double-sized piece of construction paper with three paper images of sailing ships glued to the top and the words (in Damian's handwriting!) "Christopher Columbus October 12 1492" across the bottom. "I wrote that because that's the day Christopher Columbus discovered America," Damian informed me proudly. I feel mixed. Oh so mixed. Pleased. He's learning history now, not just the three Rs. This is cool. Delighted. He wrote all that? Complete with lower case? Tickled. He's so enthusiastic about learning, it warms my heart. I know, I know. It's Columbus Day today. This is the easy form, history in child sized doses. But does it have to be? I didn't tell Damian today that his teacher was wrong – or, at least, only half right – because I didn't want to demolish his pleasure and his pride. But maybe next year or the year after, when he seems ready, I want to leaven the official elementary school story with something more complex and a great deal darker. I think it's important to understand that there's more than one way to see any historical event and that the way you learn it in school (at least at this level) is merely surface gloss. It's important to shaping a thinker, not just someone who trusts rote learning for all the answers. Answers are much harder to come by than that. Posted by Tamar at October 12, 2004 10:05 PM

The celebration of Columbus is the veneration of colonialism, conquest, and genocide. As people of conscience, we must move our society closer to the democratic values of equality for all, through historical accuracy, justice in the judicial and political processes of the country, and respect for diverse peoples and cultures. The Transform Columbus Day (TCD) Alliance, a coalition of over eighty social justice organizations, which has been protesting the Columbus Day parade in Denver since 1989, calls now for the unequivocal abolition of the Columbus Day holiday as a local, state, and national holiday. The celebration of Columbus is the veneration of colonialism, conquest, and genocide. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchu Tum, has already committed to come to Denver to march with TCD for the elimination of Columbus Day, and for the construction of mutual respect among people through the All Nations / Four Directions March. She has also committed to enlisting the support of other Nobel Laureates, such as Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.

Kathleen - Well, with Columbus Day approaching it seems an interesting topic to consider how we teach about Columbus, what really happened, how it happened and what impact it had upon people on both sides of the ocean. So just jump right in!
Kathleen - Those of us who are over hmmmm 35, learned a rather slanted story about Columbus, no?
Mtn ette/4/WV - Hi everybody!!! Saw a great Columbus Day thing on the chatboard that I copied Gumbo/K/La - RATHER slanted, indeed, Kathleen!!!! :-) Kathleen - Valerie's idea was to use a child's backpack as the claimed territory...seizing it and calling it ours. eliciting reactions and appraisals and opinions. - What literature is accurate about Columbus? Kathy/5/IA - Yes, Kathleen! The older I got, the more I couldn't understand the reason we even had Columbus Day.

Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. Views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of the AFSC.

Most people in our area don't really pay attention to Columbus Day other that they won't be recieving any mail. I wanted to do something to commemorate the day so I created this installation on the campus where I teach. Each of the yellow flags have "Columbus" and "Colonize" printed on them. The red flags have 'survive' and "live" printed on them. I created this work completely annonomously. I wanted people to "discover" the artwork and make their own conclusions about its' meaning. The flags are formed into a medicine wheel design. I thought the shadows worked nicely.
