Thought to have been a Spanish Jew, he was born in Genoa, Italy, and first arrived in Portugal clinging to wreckage from an Italian galley.
Believing that Asia could be reached by sailing westwards, he eventually won the support of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain and set off on his first voyage from Palos on 3 August 1492 with three small ships, the , the Pinta , and his flagship the Santa Maria . Land was sighted on 12 October, probably Watling Island (now San Salvador Island), and within a few weeks he reached Cuba and Haiti, returning to Spain in March 1493. Santa Maria , sunk off Hispaniola on 25 December 1492, was located.

Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus' landing in America on 12 October 1492 marks a landmark event in world history, opening up a New World for Europeans. But he remains a controversial figure. Despite popular belief, Columbus (1451-1506) did not 'discover' America. Civilisations there dated back thousands of years and European explorers and colonists did a great deal of damage to the native cultures. Columbus was a great navigator in his day, although he believed the Earth's circumference to be much smaller than it is and that Asia was much larger than it is. But despite all this, and the fact that Columbus spent his whole life believing he had in fact landed in Asia, he ranks as a great explorer for his bravery in sailing into the unknown. His voyages opened up large-scale trade links between the Old World and the New. http://staff.esuhsd.org/~balochie/studentprojects/newworldfoods/
New World Foods by Bethany Remy A lot of the foods that we enjoy today have not been around forever. When Christopher Columbus sailed west in 1492, he discovered a lot more than just new people and new land. On this new land that he discovered there were new kinds of food that Europeans had never heard of or seen. Columbus ate food that he had never tasted before, and he brought these foods back to Europe and Africa, ....and they spread like fire! New World Foods: corn, potato, tomato, bell pepper, chili pepper, vanilla, tobacco, beans, pumpkin, cassava root, avocado, peanut, pecan , cashew, pineapple, blueberry, sunflower, petunia, black-eyed susan, dahlia, marigold, quinine, wild rice, cacao (chocolate), gourds, and squash. Corn: Corn was grown by the North American, Central American, and South American Indians. They grew corn for thousands and thousands of years, even before Christopher Columbus arrived. These Indians helped starving early settlers by introducing corn to them and showing them how to cook it and also how to grow it. However, when Christopher Columbus did arrive in the West Indies, he traded with the Indians that were there for corn and brought it back to Spain. Corn was later shown to other countries and before you know it, corn was all over the world. Potato: The potato originated in South America and the Inca Indians of Bolivia Chile , and Peru grew potatoes beginning hundreds of years ago. The Incas used the potatoes to make chuno, which is a floury substance. The chuno was used as a substition for wheat in bread. The potato first arrived in Europe in the the mid 1500's. The English explorers were the ones to introduce potatoes to England and this popular food soon spread to Ireland and Scotland. In fact, the potato became so widespread and popular that in many countries it became the staple crop. The potato grew very well in

He was an explorer and trader who crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Americas on October 12th under the flag of Castilian Spain . He believed that the earth was a relatively small sphere , and argued that a ship could reach the Far East via a westward course. The widespread notion that Columbus encountered opposition based on the idea that the earth was flat is a literary myth created by Washington Irving . Educated people in Columbus's time agreed that the earth was round; anyone familiar with seafaring certainly knew it, since the roundness of the earth forms the basis of celestial navigation . The main debate was over whether a ship could circumnavigate the planet without running out of food or getting stuck in windless regions.

    1. "Columbus: Fact vs. Fiction" by the Order Sons of Italy in America

This study presents a series of documented facts on the life of Columbus, his explorations and their significance, as well as the history of Columbus Day in the United States. It also examines the controversial charges about the explorer that have been levied in recent years, which accuse him of racism, genocide, and slave trading.
Using seminal sources, including Columbus's own journals, scholarly biographies and recent research, "Columbus: Fact vs. Fiction" presents convincing evidence that:

And of all discoverers christopher columbus was the greatest, The minglingof the peoples of the Old and new world, never before brought into contact
    http://www.ewtn.com/library/HOMELIBR/columbus.htm
Honoring Christopher Columbus Warren H. Carroll, PH.D.
Let us begin, therefore, by defining the word "discovery" in the context of history. A discovery is made when an individual or a nation finds something or someone or some people or some places of special importance, not previously known to them. When any previously unknown people is first found by another people, that people may be said to have been discovered. People as well as places can be discovered. The fact that people live in places unknown to another people does not mean that they, and the places where they live, cannot be discovered. No people from any other part of the world ever discovered Europe; but Europeans discovered all other parts of the world. In all of history, only the Europeans and the Polynesians of the south Pacific have been true discoverers, sailing for the explicit purpose of finding new lands, trading with their people, and colonizing them. And of all discoverers Christopher Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds. Before Columbus' time all European voyages had followed coastlines, or crossed open seas to lands previously known or at least sighted by storm-driven ships. Only Columbus set off directly across a broad, unknown sea with no specific knowledge of how far it extended or what lay on the other side. To be sure, Columbus was convinced that he could reach Asia from Europe within the time during which the provisions he carried in his three ships would sustain his men. But he was wrong about that. If America had not existed

    Today
The Hero Christopher Columbus returned to Spain a hero. His letter to the King and Queen regarding his discovery had been printed and dispersed among the population: The sierras and the mountains, the plains, the champaigns, are so lovely and so rich for planting and sowing, for breeding cattle of every kind, for building towns and villages. The harbours of the sea here are such as cannot be believed to exist Columbus's return to Spain unless they have been seen, and so with the rivers, many and great, and of good water, the majority of which contain gold. In the trees, fruits and plants, there is a great difference from those of Juana. In this island, there are many spices and great mines of gold and of other metals. . I have taken possession of all for their Highnesses, and all are more richly endowed than I know how or am able to say, and I hold all for their Highnesses, so that they may dispose of them as they do of the kingdoms of Castile and as absolutely. . . .

Before the Voyage Biography of Christopher Columbus
    Fifteenth Century Europe and Spain

Biography of Christopher Columbus A portrait of Christopher Columbus According to most historians, Christopher Columbus Regardless of when and where Columbus was born, it is evident from his earliest writings and from testimonies by friends and family members that he had a fascination with the ocean. From a young age he would watch boats crossing the Mediterranean Sea as they traded up and down the European coast. Columbus read everything about the sea that he could find. This passion for adventure and exploration led Columbus to take his life to the waters. He set out from home, wherever that may have been, with the intent to explore and discover unknown and interesting places.
