Christopher was born in 1451, in Genoa, Italy. Although the exact date of Christopher's birth is unknown, he is believed to have been born between August 25 and October 31. In Christopher's time, people did not celebrate their birthdays. Instead, they celebrated the feast day of their patron saint. Christopher was baptized in the name of St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. St. Christopher's feast day is June 25.

Also Known As: Cristobal Colon (Spanish) and Cristoforo Colombo (Italian) Five centuries after his daring voyage to the Americas, Christopher Columbus remains as famous as he might have hoped. He's just not as popular as he might have hoped. Though Columbus is undoubtedly one of history's great mariners, recent years have seen much squabbling over whether he was a good-guy hero who discovered new worlds, or a not-so-nice guy who helped grab the Americas from their native inhabitants. Financed by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille , Columbus sailed across the Atlantic in search of a sea passage to India. His mission was twofold: open trade routes for exploitation and bring the word of Jesus Christ to the uninitiated. In 1492 he sailed with three ships (

Christopher Columbus History and Information Columbus Day is celebrated in the United States to honor Christopher Columbus's first voyage to America in 1492.
Columbus is the explorer who discovered America in that year.
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 to Domenico Columbo, a wool weaver.
He worked for his Father until he was 22 then set out to follow his own dream to become a sea captain. Many of his fellow Genoese had prospered in Lisbon under the Portuguese flag as Captains of sailing ships and he longed to join their ranks. It was to this end that Columbus began to educate himself learning to read and speak Portuguese, Castilian and Latin. He read many geography books, and studied the bible and the writings of Marco Polo, gathering all the information he could about the world. He particularly studied, Pierre d' Ailly's "Imago Mundi," or picture of the world. He became a chart maker himself and because of these studies became convinced that the world was spherical, round instead of flat. This belief later became the basis for his quest of finding a shorter route to Asia. Asia offered many goods Europeans craved but traveling East to get them was difficult and dangerous. However, it was

On Aug. 3, 1492, Columbus sailed from Palos, Spain, with three small ships, the commanded by Columbus himself, the Pinta San Salvador ) in the Bahamas. He took possession for Spain and, with impressed natives aboard, discovered other islands in the neighborhood. On Oct. 27 he sighted Cuba and on Dec. 5 reached Hispaniola. On Christmas Eve the was wrecked on the north coast of Hispaniola, and Columbus, leaving men there to found a colony, hurried back to Spain on the
      Second Expedition
      Third Expedition
On his third expedition, in 1498, Columbus was forced to transport convicts as colonists, because of the bad reports on conditions in Hispaniola and because the novelty of the New World was wearing off. He sailed still farther south and made his landfall on Trinidad. He sailed across the mouth of the Orinoco River (in present Venezuela) and realized that he saw a continent, but without further exploration he hurried back to Hispaniola to administer his colony. In 1500 an independent governor arrived, sent by Isabella and Ferdinand as the result of reports on the wretched conditions in the colony, and he sent Columbus back to Spain in chains. The admiral was immediately released, but his favor was on the wane; other navigators, including Amerigo Vespucci , had been in the New World and established much of the coast line of NE South America.

A review of the book, "Christopher Columbus, Mariner", by Samuel Morison. 1,194 words ( approx. 4.8 pages ), 1 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
This paper examines how Samuel Morison turns a personal life interest into a passion as he studies the life and journeys of Christopher Columbus in his book, "Christopher Columbus, Mariner". It shows that, while the modern view of Columbus has been rewritten and disfigured by multiculturalists into that of a greedy, slave-mongering, tyrannical despot, Christopher Columbus's journey and his exploits arose from his deep convictions, and these actions qualify him as one of the greatest explorers of all time.
From the Paper:
"His lack of actual empirical knowledge of the length of the journey, and not knowing about the continent which lay between Columbus and the Far East is one more of the factors which make his journey such a triumph of spirit and dedication to his chosen task. After long negotiations, Columbus was financed for his voyage by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, and in the fall of 1492, three ships were prepared in the harbor Palos (p. 35). On August 3, 1492, the fleet left Palos heading westward, parallel of Gomera. The weather was good; "like April in Andalusia," as Columbus wrote in his diary."

Although Columbus made one of the single most important discoveries in Western history, he died a poor, forgotten man. In this video, historians separate the man from the myth. Using period accounts and interviews with experts, Biography weaves a portrait of a man who never managed the credit he was due, a man over whom there is still ferocious debate. 54. Columbus Day And Christopher Columbus - A History
A look at the life of christopher columbus and the history of the day named in his On October 12, 1492, columbus first saw the islands of the new world,
http://wilstar.com/holidays/columbus.htm
HRISTOPHER COLUMBUS discovered America in 1492. At least that is what all elementary school children were always taught: "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Of course, Columbus never did "discover" North America, and the regions he did explore were already inhabited. He only discovered them from the viewpoint of the Europeans. Yet his first voyage did prove one thing for sure, that the earth was not only round, but that it was bigger than he had thought, Eratosthenes notwithstanding. One of the first known celebrations marking the discovery of the "New World" by Christopher Columbus was in 1792, when a ceremony organized by the Colombian Order was held in New York City honoring Christopher Columbus and the 300th anniversary of his landing in the Bahamas. Then, on October 12, 1866 the Italian population of New York organized the first celebration of the discovery of America. Three years later, in 1869 Italians in San Francisco celebrated October 12 calling it C-Day. To mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' voyage, in 1892, President Benjamin Harrison made a commemorative proclamation. But it was Colorado, in 1905, that became the first state to observe a Columbus Day. Since 1920 the day has been celebrated annually, and in 1937 President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12 as Columbus Day. That's where it remained until 1971 when Congress declared it a federal public holiday on the second Monday in October. Christopher Columbus (1451 - 1505) Columbus, the son of a wool merchant and weaver, was born in Genoa, Italy and went to sea at the age of 14. Following a shipwreck off the coast of Portugal in 1470, he swam ashore and settled in that country.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
Born in 1451 - Died in 1506
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa (JEN oh uh) ,Italy. He was the oldest of five children in his family. His father was a wool weaver. He helped his father with the weaving, but he always wanted to sail the seas.
He didn't get to go to school very much, but he learned to read and write Spanish during his travels. He also taught himself Latin because all the geography books were written in Latin.
Some people thought he was trying to prove that the world was round, but this is not true. Most people already knew the earth was round. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship.
He was a Christian and wanted to tell the story of Christ to the people he would find in the far-away lands. He also wanted wealth for himself and for Spain, and he wanted to be famous.

Editor's note: For additional "explorer" resources, be sure to check out this week's CURRICULUM story, Across the Sea: Europeans Explore the New World Students, perhaps distracted by the October 12 school holiday, often forget that Christopher Columbus wasn't the only explorer who sailed into uncharted seas to find an unknown land. They may not even realize that he wasn't even the first of those adventurers to set foot in the New World. Historians believe Leif Erikson, an Icelander, was the first European to arrive in North America, landing in what is now Canada in 1001. Then why is Columbus so widely-known and celebrated and Erikson so often ignored or forgotten? Pose the question before you begin exploring "Explorer" Web sites. Students should be able to answer that question and many more at the end of their online voyages.

When you think of exploring new territory, what comes to mind? Hacking through the wild bush with a machete? Sailing into the unknown on large ships? Blasting off in a rocket into space? There are several ways to explore the unknown, just like there are several different reasons to do so. Until the late 1400s, Europeans didn't know North and South America even existed. Motives for Exploration:
  • Desire for wealth and fame.
  • Geographical knowledge.
  • To spread the gospel.
  • National pride.
  • Faster, cheaper trade routes.
  • Thrill of adventure. The New World
Christopher Columbus made one of the most famous voyages of exploration in 1492. Columbus sailed from Palos, Spain in search of a route to Asia and the Indies. He thought the Indies were full of riches. Instead, Columbus found the New World - North America. Other voyages soon followed Columbus'. At first, Europeans thought North America was a chunk of land blocking their way to the Indies. It didn't take long for them to find out North America had a lot to offer, like fur trading.
