Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students often ask why these texts are important and how they relate to more conventional U.S. literature. You might suggest that they entertain a change in their traditional concept of the U.S. as an English-based country, considering the paradigm of a land that from the start was in contention by forces of several language groups and distinct origins. Students should be taught that this situation is still the same, in spite of the assumption that English won out. The forces present in this period are still contending for a place in U.S. territory. Perhaps the oldest tradition in the U.S. is the struggle among different groups for the recognition of the right to participate fully in making the future of this land.

Christopher Columbus and the New World Part 2: The Long First Voyage Columbus knew of the great reputation of Portugal in exploration. Prince Henry the Navigator had been sending ships to explore Africa and the East for years. Columbus asked Portugal's King John II for money and ships for his voyage. King John refused, so Columbus went to Spain. At first, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella also refused. Columbus tried for seven years to get them to accept his proposal, but they kept on saying no. Finally, he told them he would move to France and ask the French king for help. The Spanish king and queen finally said yes. Columbus spent the early months of 1492 getting ready for the voyage. His three shipsthe Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria set sail from Palos, Spain, on August 3. Columbus captained the Santa Maria.

Resources for the Study of the Age of Exploration
There are a number of very good sources of online information regarding the Age of Exploration. An outstanding multimedia project, The European Voyages of Exploration , has been put together by the Applied History Research Group at the University of Calgary. For the student interested in general survey accounts the 1492 Exhibit is quite good. Andre Engels' Discoverers Web contains hundreds of links to further information and is an excellent place to start looking for hints to further online research. His page on primary sources is as outstanding as it is thorough. Richard Hooker has written a fine section of his general survey of western civilization called Discovery The Beginnings , and the Mariners' Museum at Newport News, Virginia, is excellent as well. On Columbus, check out Columbus and the Age of Discovery from Millersville University (Pennsylvania) and Keith A. Pickering's Columbus Navigation Home Page . Andre Engels has collected an extensive list of links on Christophorus Columbus . You can also read Dinesh D'Souza's 1995 article "The Crimes of Christopher Columbus."

Born: 1451
Died: 1506 On the morning of Oct. 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus stepped ashore on an island in the Americas. It was one of the most important landings in history. At that time, Europeans knew nothing of the vast Western Hemisphere. Columbus opened up a new world for exploration and settlement.
Columbus' history-making voyage from Spain to America was unusual in two ways. For one, Columbus was not the first white man to see America. About 500 years earlier, small groups of Norsemen made brief visits to the American coast. But their settlements were not permanent, and later Europeans were unaware of their explorations. For centuries it was believed that Columbus "discovered" America.
Furthermore, Columbus landed in America by accident. He was seeking a western sea route from Europe to Asia. When he sighted America, he believed that he had reached his goal. And to the day he died he still believed that he had reached Asia. Although Columbus was mistaken, he still ranks as a great discoverer. Only his magnificent seamanship and powerful leadership could have made possible the long voyage over the unknown ocean that medieval people called the "Sea of Darkness." Early Life of Columbus

Christopher Columbus: Explorer

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India (in order to trade for spices). He made a total of four trips to the Caribbean and South America during the years 1492-1504. The First Trip:
), the Pinta (owned and captained by Martin Alonzo Pinzon ), and the Santa Maria (captained by Columbus), and about 90 crew members. They set sail on Aug. 3, 1492 from Palos, Spain, and on October 11, 1492, spotted the Caribbean islands off southeastern North America. They landed on an island they called Guanahani, but Columbus later renamed it San Salvador. They were met by the local Taino Indians, many of whom were captured by Columbus' men and later sold into slavery. Columbus thought he had made it to Asia, and called this area the Indies, and called its inhabitants Indians. While exploring the islands in the area and looking for gold to loot, Columbus' men traveled to the islands of Hispaniola (now divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Cuba, and many other smaller islands. On the return trip, the Santa Maria was wrecked and the captain of the Pinta sailed off on his own to try to beat Columbus back. Columbus returned to Spain in the Nina, arriving on March 15, 1493.

CABEZA DE VACA, ALVAR NUNEZ

Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca [Cabeza de Vaca means "head of a cow"] (1490?-1557?) was a Spanish explorer who sailed to North America from Spain, leaving in 1527. He traveled from Florida to Texas on a raft, then walked from Texas to Mexico City. He also explored the Paraguay River in South America. Sebastian Cabot (1474?-1557?) was an explorer, mapmaker and navigator of Italian descent. He worked as a cartographer (mapmaker) for England's King Henry VIII, was a captain for Spain's King Ferdinand V, explored for England's King Henry VII, and may have secretly explored for Venice. Sebastian Cabot's father was the explorer John Cabot Cabot searched for the Northwest passage across North America (1508). He began an unsuccessful trip around the world (1526-1529) in a voyage that supposed to sail to China and the Moluccas (the Spice Islands, in Indonesia), but he only made it as far as the enormous mouth of the Rio de la Plata (a river between Argentina and Uruguay in South America). Later, he began to work for the English again, searching for a water passage across the north of Asia around 1553.

He was the first European since the Vikings to "discover" the New World. The Journal of the Admiral of the Ocean Sea July 15, 1492 As I prepare for my expedition to the Indies, I wanted to write about my life so far so that when I return triumphantly, everyone shall remember my greatness! My name is Cristoforo Colombo, but most people know me as Christopher Columbus. I was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, the oldest of five children. I was an obedient son. I had little schooling, so I did not learn to read or write as a young boy. But I always loved the sea. I vowed as a young boy that as soon as I was old enough, I would go to sea. I traveled to Greece and Portugal, and I became a sailor in my early teens. In 1476, I was a crewman on a ship that was attacked by French pirates. I was lucky and found a piece of what was left of the ship. Fortunately, I was able to swim the six miles to shore. I traveled to Lisbon, Portugal where my brother, Bartholomew, owned a book and map store. I read many of the books and studied the maps until I had taught myself all I could learn about navigation and mapmaking. I was fascinated by Marco Polo’s accounts of his journey to Asia in 1271. I believe that the quickest and most direct route to this fascinating place is to cross the unknown waters that we call the "Sea of Darkness."

HOME TIMELINE HALL of FAME LINKS ... BIBLIOGRAPHY CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS (1451-1506) Christopher Columbus is one of the best-known of all explorers. He is famous for his voyage in 1492, when he "discovered" America while he was looking for a way to sail to Asia. Columbus was probably born in Genoa, Italy, around 1451. His real name was Christoforo Columbo. His wife, a Portuguese women who he married around 1480, was Felipa Perestrello e Moniz. They had one son named Diego. He made several voyages to the New World, which he thought was Asia. His first voyage took place in 1492. He led an expedition of three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. On October 12, 1492, the expedition landed on a small island in the Caribbean Sea. Columbus was sure that he was close to Asia. His second voyage was from 1493 to 1496. This time, he took 17 ships and 1200 sailors and colonists looking for riches in the New World and a quick route to Asia. On this trip, he explored Cuba and discovered the islands of Jamaica, Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico. He went again to the New World from 1498 to 1500. His final voyage was in 1502-1504. Christopher Columbus died in 1506.

    Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus, the son of a respected weaver and local politician, was born in Genoa. He worked in his father's business, but chose to go to sea at age 14. Columbus sailed throughout the Mediterranean and one day was shipwrecked off the coast of Portugal. Making his way to Lisbon, he joined a brother and worked as a chart maker. During the second half of the 15th century, Portugal was the great Western center of explorers and adventurers, and the staging area for the quest to find an ocean path to the East. During his years in Portugal, Columbus heard tales from sailors about lands beyond the known world's western extremity. Educated people of the day recognized that the earth was a sphere, but no European was aware of the existence of the American continents and the Pacific Ocean. Columbus became one of the few voices to call for sailing west to reach the lucrative markets of China and Japan. His idea was given a hearing by the Portuguese king, John II, but royal support was given instead to those seeking to sail eastward around Africa for the same purpose. Around 1479, Columbus married, but his wife died in 1485. Having failed to gain Portuguese support for a westward exploratory voyage, Columbus moved to Spain with his son Diego. At the time, Spain was a lesser power than Portugal and consumed by a protracted war against the Moors. Nevertheless, Columbus' proposal received a polite reception from the Spanish monarchs

    The Legacy of Christopher Columbus
For many years, Christopher Columbus was regarded as one of the great heroes of western history. He was touted as the New World's pivotal discoverer who subsequently brought civilization to its backward peoples. Whatever hardships and cruelties were inflicted upon the natives was generally thought to be insignificant in comparison with the benefits of European science and religion. Yet even his most ardent admirers acknowledge that Columbus was self-centered, ruthless, avaricious and a racist. During the latter part of the 20th century, a Native American awareness movement developed in the United States and elsewhere, which called Columbus' legacy into question. To those critics, 1492 represented not just a major turning point in world history, but the starting gun for the destruction of native cultures. Exploration was quickly superceded by settlement and exploitation. War, slavery, disease and death followed in their wake. Both American and European lives were changed in what is sometimes referred to as the “Columbian Exchange.” Europeans became acquainted with corn, chocolate, potatoes, tomatoes and various peppers and spices; these imports vastly changed the diet in the Old World. Tobacco also began to exert its impact. Life in the Americas was changed by the importation of chickens, goats, horses, oxen, cattle, donkeys, sheep, coffee, rice, bananas, sugarcane, wheat and barley. On a more lethal level, diseases also were apparently exchanged. The Europeans brought a host of infectious maladies unknown in the New World, the most damaging of which was smallpox. Some authorities have suggested that syphilis was contracted by Columbus’ crew members and taken back to Europe. (More recent research, however, has indicated that syphilis may long have existed in the Old World, but was simply regarded as a form of leprosy.)
