Talking with Young Children About the Colorado School Shooting
Dr. Susan Linn
THE SCENE "Daddy, what's the matter with them?" asks four-year-old Sonia, pointing to a newspaper picture of two Columbine high school students crying. WHAT TO SAY
It's possible, and even preferable, to protect very young children and pre-readers from the details of the terrible tragedy in Littleton, Colorado. They may ask about pictures in the newspaper or things they've overheard, but there is no reason for them to be exposed to the grisly and terrifying television or radio coverage of the event. If your young children are inadvertently exposed to the situation, keep your explanations as general and reassuring as possible. Give details only as children ask for them. Here are some examples of what you might say to small children. What do you think is happening?
Getting a sense of what your child knows or imagines about the photograph is a good starting place for talking about it. Those people are sad.
Try giving a general response, associating a feeling to whatever your child has seen. Answer questions in more detail only if they ask. That boy is hurt.

52. Longitudinal Study Of Student Growth
Under provisions of current law (227-603), all colorado schools may soon receive report card scores based on longitudinal growth (beginning in 2005-2006).
http://matrix10.d20.co.edu/lssg/
With respect to adequate yearly growth, how much yearly improvement is reasonable, attainable, and equitable? Recently enacted laws increase the accountability of schools, districts, and states by calling for improved achievement of all students. These new federal and state laws (including the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and H.B. 02-1349) call for schools to demonstrate that all students are making adequate yearly progress in reading and mathematics. The laws also call for schools to close achievement gaps that may currently exist. Throughout the country, educators wrestle with what is expected in terms of yearly growth. This describes a project involving five Colorado districts that joined forces to investigate student growth as called for by recently enacted laws. The five districts include Academy School District 20, Boulder Valley School District, Eaton School District, Jefferson County School District, and Mapleton School District. Together, these districts represent 20 percent of students in the state. Recently, the study expanded (now called Phase 1b). Under provisions of current law (22-7-603), all Colorado schools may soon receive report card scores based on longitudinal growth (beginning in 2005-2006). Recently 37 Colorado districts voluntarily pooled state assessment data to address the aims of the law. These districts represent 45 percent of the state student population (339,707 of 757,668 students). The goal of this work is to clarify the notion of adequate yearly progress (AYP). This study identifies subgroup gaps that exist and thus helps determine the extent to which schools are achieving their AYP aims. This study models growth in achievement while controlling for student and school characteristics. The intent is to determine the extent to which school and program effects explain growth in achievement.

Timetable Residency GENERAL INFORMATION - The School of Medicine is a part of the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center , located in Denver and Aurora, CO. The Health Sciences Center also includes the schools of dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and the graduate school. Basic science and clinical opportunities for the medical students are located throughout the Denver area in a number of hospitals and clinics. Rural health experiences are found throughout the state of Colorado. Although no official student housing is provided, the school is located in a neighborhood with a wide range of housing choices. The Student Assistance Office provides housing information. The medical school is home to approximately 1,800 fulltime and 3,000 volunteer faculty members. In addition to educating students and participating in research, the faculty assume considerable responsibilty for patient care. Opportunities for student research and a variety of extracurricular activities are available. Curriculum - The curriculum is designed to provide the scientific and clinical background to prepare graduates for the practice of medicine. Most of the basic science courses are taught during the first two phases. Students attend clerkships during the third and fourth phases. The third phase includes the core clerkships, which can be taken in any order, and the fourth phase consists almost entirely of electives. As part of the School's commitment to produce more generalists, a 3-year course is integrated into the required medical school curriculum. The course, entitled Foundations of Doctoring, will place students with practicing generalist physicians one-half day each week to see patients over time, learn interviewing and diagnostic skills, and experience primary care practice.

Still, numerous studies document that a completion of an undergraduate certificate or degree has a significant effect on earnings over the course of one's work life. According to a study released by the National Center for Education Statistics in 1998 college graduates earned from 56 to 100 percent more than those who completed only a high school education. In contrast, adults, ages 25 - 34 who dropped out of high school earned 30 percent less than their peers who received a high school diploma. You should also keep in mind that, as you enter the world of work in Colorado, you will be competing in one of the most highly educated labor forces in the United States. Nearly 40% of Colorado's adults who are 25 years of age or older have a baccalaureate degree. The Colorado high growth occupations table lists many of the occupations in Colorado that are and will continue to be in high demand through 2006, including education/training requirements, annual demand, and average earnings. As you glance through this information from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, you will see the relationship of education and earnings.

The Spirit of Education at Mines
by: Melville F. Coolbaugh
When man first began to realize that by developing his power of thought he could make his life more comfortable and satisfying, then and not until then did he begin to be distinguished from the lower forms of animals and to become master over them. That was the beginning of the education of the human race.
A study of history throughout the ages shows that education, like other phases of human interests, has had its periods of depression or stagnation, and its periods of prosperity or advancement, but the general curve has always been upward. Today there is an almost universal demand that each individual should have, through education, the opportunity to express himself fully and to live more harmoniously and understandingly with his fellow man.
These expressions seem to me to be quite typical of the spirit of true education today. If such ideals could become the goal striven for by parents throughout the world, then education could look forward to a period of great advancement.
However, this article is not to be of education or the spirit of education in general, but rather the education and spirit represented by the Colorado School of Mines.
