    Colorado School of Mines
Throughout its 123-year history, the Colorado School of Mines has had a distinct focus on the natural resources sector. CSM provides quality education, research and outreach in all areas of science and engineering. Graduate programs in science, economics and engineering provide students with educational and research opportunities in materials, energy, minerals, environmental science and engineering, and the production and utilization of natural resources. Balancing resource availability and environmental integrity is a primary focus for many of CSM's graduate programs.
    Why CSM?
    • CSM offers a location second to none.
CSM's programs in science, engineering, economics and energy are internationally recognized.
The average starting salary for 2003 CSM graduates was $59,373.
87% of CSM's 2003 graduates were placed by graduation.
With a $182.5 million campus renewal program in progress, CSM has invested heavily in new facilities like the Center for Technology and Learning Media.
MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering
From its inception at the Colorado School of Mines in 1952, the Chemical Engineering Department has focused on education and basic and applied research aimed at problems of national interest. At CSM, we maintain a high quality, well-funded research program with strong participation from students at both the graduate and undergraduate level. The Departmental research menu is quite broad and includes major programs in advanced materials, separations science and technologies, theoretical and applied thermodynamics, fuel cells, computational chemistry, combustion science and engineering, mathematical modeling of transport processes, methane hydrates, microfluidics, microgravity combustion and computer-aided process simulation.

The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement “There is a significant body of research that demonstrates that a qualified teacher-librarian (media specialist) has a positive impact on school culture and student achievement. Indeed, several studies have been established that teachers collaborate more in schools with a teacher-librarian and students read more, enjoy reading more, write better, access and use information more effectively and excel in academic content areas.” ~ Ken Haycock, 1996. “Competencies for Teacher-Librarians in the 21st Century,” Teacher-Librarian, February, 1996.

District School Library Media Center Plan
The goal of the Palermo Union School District’s School Library Media Center Plan is to ensure that students and staff know how to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas. Developing the ability to think clearly, critically, and creatively depends on a steady flow of information, both from direct firsthand perceptions, and from perceptions filtered and communicated through media using the language of voice, image, print, and gesture. It is the intent of the District School Library Media Center Plan to foster a program which provides an abundance of appropriate learning resources in many formats. This plan is a developmental plan that must be considered as a living document. As such, it will change as needs are met and further assessments are conducted to identify additional needs. District Vision Statement The Palermo Union School District together with students, families, and community in a cooperative effort will provide an excellent educational program to ensure that all students are provided the opportunity to become life-long learners, in a safe, caring, moral, and supportive environment that prepares students for leadership, employment, and citizenship.

Educational telecommunications is receiving increased attention on a statewide scale. The Colorado Commission on Higher Education has developed a new off-campus policy to provide state support for urban and rural access to degree programs. The Colorado Telecommunications Advisory Committee (Hume Commission) created by Senate Bill 165 requires completion of a major statewide telecommunications plan by July of 1992. Senate Bill 94 directs this commission to study the utilization of telecommunications facilities of higher education and to determine how such resources can be utilized more efficiently. Governor Romer's Five Year Economic Development Strategic Plan includes an initiative to encourage CCHE to give programs delivered through telecommunications the highest priority for state funds.
The University of Colorado, in the fall of 1988, completed a new fiber optics network linking the media centers at each of the four campuses. The network provides for the delivery of live interactive telecourses (two-way video and audio) among the four campuses. In addition, campuses are developing program plans for the expanded use of this network for telecourse delivery within the University and throughout the state. However, the University has not had a fiscal structure in place to encourage academic units to participate in either intercampus or off-campus telecommunications programs.

    I. Background:
Colorado's sodomy law was repealed in 1972. Colorado has lived up to its recent notoriety. Green mountains and wide open spaces yes, but no space for LGBT inclusive education. Although there has been no mention of excluding the LGBT experience from this state's curriculum, that is due primarily to the fact that no one from the state's educational system deemed correspondence from our offices worthy of reply. LETTERS SENT OVER A PERIOD OF SIX MONTHS WERE NEVER ANSWERED. Your guess at how this state will respond to inquiries regarding their position on curriculum adoption policies is as good as ours: namely, if you have the word gay in your letterhead, don't expect a response. Period. The regular state legislative session runs from Jan-10 to May-08; the legislature's Home Page is:

YELLOW SCHOOL BUS PROVIDES MORE THAN TRANSPORTATION Baltimore, MD(February, 28, 2005) –Bob Goodwin, president and CEO, non-profit Points of Light Foundation, today held a press conference to announce a new project that combines technology with the existing infrastructure of our country's 418,000 yellow school buses to provide a unique, comprehensive approach to violence on the buses, in our communities and in our country. provides protection to the 24 million children who ride the school bus each day. Additionally, the project will provide first responders and national Homeland Security with tools to enable them to more quickly detect and act on emergencies. Goodwin said, “As a nation one of our greatest challenges is providing for the security of our citizens. We all know that when a public emergency occurs, the first question asked is “Where are the children?” This system answers that question and more. Installing wireless communications equipment with GPS tracking capabilities and real-time video on our school buses will provide us with important information to ensure their protection. School bus incidents and reports of unsafe student activity on school buses have emphasized the need to provide officials with a means of documenting safety violations so corrective actions can be taken.” A combination of wireless communications and video information, providing real-time information of activities internally on the bus, as well as externally on each bus route, will also act as additional eyes and ears for first-responders and Homeland Security officials from the local to the national levels. This information will be available to first responders through existent or newly established Emergency Operations Center (EOCs) that exist in each community. When the project is fully implemented, this internet-based information from each EOC will be linked to national EOCs, providing instant access to the status of our children should there be an emergency or concern about conditions in local vicinities.

Businesses Nationwide Recognize Stellar Volunteers During National Volunteer Week National Volunteer Week is about thanking one of America's most valuable assets - our volunteers - and calling the public's attention to all that they do to improve our communities. The 2005 theme, "Inspire By Example," truly reflects the power volunteers have to inspire others to serve! This year during National Volunteer Week, April 17-23, 2005, businesses across the country applauded and celebrated the committed work of their workplace volunteers. Read on to learn how these companies showed their appreciation for employee volunteer efforts: Best Buy
    Best Buy
recognized its volunteers via internal communication methods and by recognition. More than 32 Best Buy employees throughout the U.S. received a Presidential Volunteer Service Award during National Volunteer Week. Employees value the Presidential certificates and lapel pins, especially because they can wear the lapel pin to the let others know of their achievement. In addition, employee names appeared on Best Buy's Intranet and additional personal stories were featured in two publications. Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boys and Girls Club traveled to Best Buy's Twin Cities campus to distribute balloons to their volunteers. Best Buy's campus candy vendor, Canteen, also donated five hundred "100 Grand" candy bars that were distributed to all employees, to recognize the 100 percent effort of Best Buy employees.
