NEW STUDY SHOWS IMPACT OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES, LIBRARIANS, ON STUDENTS
Educators and parents agree children need good skills to succeed in school. But how do they gain these skills? A new study shows that strong library media programs are an important component. "How School Librarians Help Kids Achieve Standards-the Second Colorado Study," just released by the Library Research Service of the Colorado State Library, Colorado Department of Education, demonstrates that student scores on standardized tests are ten to eighteen percent higher at schools with outstanding library media programs and staff. Deputy Commission of Education Dick Elmer said, "We are beginning to isolate data which enables us to determine the factors that contribute to higher student achievement on the CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program) test. I've always believed school libraries play a critical role in successful teaching. I'm not surprised they contribute to higher CSAP scores." The study found that CSAP reading scores are higher in schools whose library media programs are better staffed, stocked, and funded, and where library media specialists play a leadership role in their schools, collaborate with classroom teachers in the design and delivery of instruction, and utilize computer networks to extend the reach of the library media center throughout the school. * School library media specialists who are leaders meet regularly with their principals, serve with teachers on standards and curriculum committees, and meet regularly with their own staff.

Celebrating 20 years! The Center for Wave Phenomena (CWP) at the Colorado School of Mines supports a graduate level interdisciplinary research and education program in seismic exploration, monitoring and wave propagation. The main focus of the CWP program is on seismic modeling, imaging, and inversion methods, as well as on improving the accuracy and efficiency of seismic processing algorithms, especially for application to regions of structural complexity. CWP, established at the Colorado School of Mines in 1984, is partially supported by an international consortium of 23 oil and service companies as well as various government agencies. Housed in the Geophysics Department in the Green Center, we have excellent computational facilities. We invite you to browse these pages to learn more about the CWP faculty and students, and about our research and Consortium Project. Opportunities for Graduate Students CWP at the Colorado School of Mines seeks candidates with strong backgrounds in earth sciences, applied mathematics, computer science, or physics to pursue MS/PhD degrees in geophysics. Our faculty are strongly committed to quality geophysical education.

School Libraries Get Top Marks with Help from IMLS Grants Students in schools with media centers that are well-staffed, have networked technology, and have strong collections perform better on standardized tests, according to a major study funded in part by IMLS. The Library Research Service of the Colorado State Library released a report in June 2000. It showed that state reading scores for students in schools that focused on improving their library programs were, on average, eight to 21 percent higher than similar schools without such development, even when other factors like community demographics are taken into account. Findings from this and other studies across the country prove what many in the library community already know: that school media centers can make a big difference in student achievement. Through the administration of Library Services and Technology (LSTA) grants through state library agencies, IMLS has developed a track record of support for school libraries and librarians. Many of these libraries are earning extra credit with students, teachers, principals, and communities with projects that reach underserved audiences, promote literacy and reading, improve collections, and use technology creatively. Lesson in partnership The Federal Hocking School District is located in the rural foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio. District services are spread across 250 square miles, and the public library is as far as 20 miles away from the homes of some residents. District librarian Bonnie Lackey strives to provide library services to the district's 1,444-student population, which includes many from low-income families. A coalition between the school district and the Nelsonville public library was formed as a result of LSTA funds. The coalition established the
