Evaluating Nutrition Programs
Nutritious diets are related to reduction of disease and the improvement of health and well-being: 35% of cancer deaths are linked to diet (U.S. National Cancer Institute estimate, 1997 ).......... The best way to help lower your blood cholesterol level is to eat less saturated fatty acids and cholesterol, and control your weight (The American Heart Association, 1997)........... As a result, many nutrition education programs have been developed. Goals of these programs are often to provide information and ultimately to change participants' dietary behaviors. How do we know if nutrition education programs "work?" What evaluation methods are used? The main source that I found was the Journal of Extension,( about) Evaluating Evaluation What We've Learned (Research in Brief )"This paper reports the results of telephone surveys with Extension nutrition specialists and field staff who participatedin IIP.Although two separate surveys and analyses were used, both examined the use of nationally developed evaluation instruments focused on nutrition impact indicators and the perceived importance of the program evaluation process in general" (from abstract) by K. Chapman-Novakofski, Extension Nutrition Specialist, University ofIllinois, Urbana, Illinois et al. Journal of Extension Volume 35 Number 1 February 1997.

America's Second Harvest
The mission of America's Second Harvest is to create a hunger-free America. We distribute food and grocery products through a nationwide network of certified affiliates, increase public awareness of domestic hunger, and advocate for policies that benefit America's hungry. Our network includes more than 200 food banks and food-rescue organizations, serving every county in the U.S. The effectiveness and operating efficiency of this network depends on the cooperation of food banks, food-rescue organizations, service agencies, donors, and national programs.
Center on Hunger and Poverty
The Center on Hunger and Poverty promotes policies that improve the lives of low-income children and families. Center activities include research and policy analysis, public education initiatives, and assistance to policy makers and organizations across the country on poverty- and hunger-related issues. The site has facts about hunger, state-level statistics and more.

University of Colorado School of Medicine Receives AAMC Outstanding Community Service Award
Washington, D.C., October 28, 2000 As the only medical school within 500 miles, the University of Colorado (CU) School of Medicine has the unique sense of duty to serve all citizens, not only in Denver, but the entire region. Whether caring for the medically indigent, increasing the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in the health professions, providing patient care to disadvantaged or isolated communities or addressing social needs in a medical context, CU is creating a positive impact on the vast region the school serves. In recognition of the school's commitment, CU received the 2000 AAMC Outstanding Community Service Award today at the Association's 111th annual meeting in Chicago. "The purpose of this award is to recognize the vitally important services medical schools and teaching hospitals provide to communities across the country," said AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D. "The University of Colorado has established itself as an invaluable resource to the state of Colorado and an example of the difference a medical school can make."

COLORADO Colorado University School of Pharmacy Nutrition Service-Learning Program Congratulations to the Colorado University School of Pharmacy Nutrition Service-Learning Program, their pilot year school partner, Whittier Elementary, and current partners, Mitchell and Harrington Elementary, Denver, Colorado, for being our first Healthy Kids Challenge Star recognized on our web site!
“I was first exposed to the ideas and philosophies of HKC when I was searching for a way to integrate community service and teaching of basic nutrition principles to pharmacy students. I stumbled across Cooking Light's pilot project designed to teach children principles of healthy nutrition and I immediately recognized a good project that would meet my goals.” – Catherine Jarvis, PharmD, BCNSP, Asst. Dean for Student and Professional Affairs, School of Pharmacy, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center
“Dr. Jarvis and the entire pharmacy faculty and curriculum committee are to be commended for their vision and foresight to join together pharmacy students and elementary kids to create a beneficial experience for all involved. The elementary school teachers are provided with classroom assistance making it easier to offer more interactive learning, the pharmacy students are able to develop their skills in a real world situation, and the kids…….their smiles say it all!” ” – Vickie L.
