http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue5_6/bishoff/
The Colorado Digitization Project (CDP at http://coloradodigital.coalliance.org ) is a collaborative initiative involving Colorado's archives, historical societies, libraries, and museums. The Project's goal is to increase access to the special collections and unique resources of the cultural heritage institutions through digitization. The CDP received a two-year IMLS grant, with the goal of further developing the collaborative, increasing the amount of digital resources linked through the CDP Web site, testing the guidelines and standards developed by the CDP and creating a model for statewide library/museum collaboration that can be adopted by other states. To meet the objective of increasing access, development and adoption of standards or best practices for the description of digital objects was critical. The presentation identifies the key Project assumptions, the approach the CDP has taken to achieve the goal of increased access, as well as barriers. The second key area of standards for the Project is scanning. Establishing minimum scan standards, identifying quality control guidelines, and options for scanning all are needed to assure a degree of consistency and quality across these multi-institution projects.

The Circulation Desk can be reached at 303-963-3250. Students should present their ID to check out materials, and community borrowers need to be entered into the system in order to check out material. Renewals are allowed via telephone, and holds can be placed on materials already checked out. Overdue materials do accrue fines and large debts may affect one’s ability to check out additional materials or be subject to referral. Students and faculty can see their check outs online via the Library Catalog, but they still must renew and place holds via phone. Checkout Policies

Staffing School Administrators Article SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARTICLE Strong Libraries Improve Student Achievement From time to time, Education World reposts articles with important messages. This article, originally posted in 2000, makes a point worth revisiting about the importance of school libraries and librarians. Last month, site-based management teams at 11 elementary schools in Kalamazoo, Michigan, chose to cut their budgets for the 2000-2001 school year by eliminating the position of school librarian. Did they make the right decision? A new study indicates that what they made was a big mistake! Included: Results of a recent study show that students at schools with strong media centers scored significantly higher on standardized tests than students at schools with less-well-equipped and staffed libraries. As you work your way through this program, you will be asked to perform several library-related tasks that can be woven together into your final research paper. If you need help, you'll be given the opportunity to see how a library expert would perform these tasks. Most of the steps will be relevant to just about any topic you choose. Read the worksheet instructions in the top part of the screen, and if you are not absolutely sure about how to complete a task, click on the Show Me How button. Help will appear in the lower part of the screen. Be sure to visit the highlighted links if they describe information unfamiliar to you. PLEASE NOTE: The Library Tutor program was created as part of a grant-funded project to bring technology into instructional activities at the University of Northern Colorado. It was in use for a couple of years, but hasn't been updated since. It remains on the web site as an early example of a library tutorial on the web. Fort Collins, Colorado On the evening of July 28, 1997, Colorado State University's (CSU) Morgan Library sustained an unprecedented amount of damage from a 500-year flood that resulted from rains west of the campus that measured between 10 and 14 inches. The flood inundated the basement of Morgan Library, covering some 462,500 volumes with 11.5 feet of water. Materials damaged included bound scientific journals in compact shelving, books, curriculum materials, current awareness materials and various offices, including Gifts and Exchange and Bindery Preparation. In this case, government publications were spared damage (except for some 200 volumes awaiting shipment to the bindery), as the collection had just been shifted to the third and fourth floors. The flood damaged some 30 buildings on campus, including the University's bookstore, which had its entire inventory for the fall semester destroyed. The Library sustained what is considered to be greatest amount of damage on record to an academic library caused by a natural disaster.

The Colorado Digitization Project
A new Collaborative:
The Colorado Digitization Project (CDP) will extend existing collaborative work undertaken by the Colorado library communities into new areas, involving museums, archives, and historical societies. The CDP is a collaborative planning and project development effort designed to increase participation in digitization efforts and to expand access to special collections in digital format. To develop the plan for this collaborative, a project an LSTA funded project, "Beyond Citations: Creating a Digital Library for Colorado" was submitted by Nancy Allen (Dean and Director of the Penrose Library at the University of Denver) and Nancy Bolt (Assistant Commissioner, Colorado Department of Education and State Librarian). A planning grant of $71,000 was awarded to the State Library for the 1998-1999 year.
The purpose of the project: to work collaboratively to bring together, from all corners of the state, digitized material that will
