APS Bond Dollars Benefit Students More than 600 students at Murphy Creek K-8 in southeast Aurora are reaping the rewards of bond dollars that funded the district's newest school. “I'd like to say thank you for our new school. Our school has a strong community feeling, and I'm excited about the opportunities I'll have here.” - Murphy Creek student Kuraan Smyer-Jones This year, Murphy Creek will also serve students in the Aurora Frontier K-8 attendance area. Aurora Frontier, now under construction in the Conservatory development, will open its doors in August 2006.
Paris Principal Judy Yates and students
Students and their families attend Murphy Creek K-8 Grand Opening. Students throughout the district are learning in improved schools. At Sixth Avenue Elementary, students are enjoying their school's full building remodel. Another school remodel is nearly complete at 875 Peoria. The building currently houses Paris Elementary students and staff members while their new school building is under construction at 16th and Paris. Staff and students at West Middle School and Hinkley High School are watching their school remodels firsthand. Both remodel projects will be completed in 2007.

We educate people about Earth and environmental science issues that are relevant to our everyday lives, through outreach to the public and to the K-12 education community. Interdisciplinary Education and Outreach
CIRES strongly supports and encourages education outreach. Programs exist for K-12 school districts, teachers and students, undergraduates at CU and elsewhere, and other community groups. Our goal is to support exemplary science education at all levels, encourage curiosity and understanding about our environment, and to bring our research to bear as a resource in service of societal needs, including education. CIRES has established a K-12 Outreach Program that combines rigorous science with innovative teaching practices. Ongoing projects include classroom and prospective teacher professional development, volunteer opportunities for scientists, education components for research projects, district partnerships, research mentors for high school students and undergraduates, and more. Other projects include collections of digital resources for geoscience education project evaluation, and for climate change education.. At the undergraduate and graduate level, CIRES faculty and researchers work within academic departments and programs to offer education and research. Project Information

ED372759 May 94 The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement.
ERIC Digest. Author: Lance, Keith Curry ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology, Syracuse, NY. THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement. METHODOLOGY Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.

Feature Story - July 2005 K-12 Building Bonanza Colorado's school districts ramping up to spend bond dollars on new projects. School construction is heating up in Colorado as school districts continue to grow and voters show an increased willingness to fund capital construction. According to Zweig White's "2005-2008 K-12 School Market K-12 School Market for Design and Construction Firms," K-12 enrollment in Colorado is expected to increase nearly 6 percent between 2005 and 2013, a trend that will continue to drive construction spending on schools.

MISSION STATEMENT
To raise environmental awareness and inspire stewardship through natural science learning experiences in Colorado's Rocky Mountain ecosystem.
Life-long Vail resident Kim Langmaid founded GRNSS in 1998 with the goal of creating a community-based organization that provides a relevant approach to teaching science and educating students of all ages about the ecology of the natural world. Since its inception, GRNSS has become a community leader in a region-wide effort to grow healthy communities by educating a local citizenry to make informed decisions about the natural environment. GRNSS delivers year-round environmental education through a variety of programs:
  • School Programs: We partner with public and private schools to annually provide over 1,000 kindergarten through 12th grade students with 3-to-5-day hands-on, natural science field learning. GRNSS works closely with teachers to ensure that field course curriculum align with state and district standards in language arts, math and science. GRNSS also assesses 5th and 7th grade programs with the goal of tracking student interest, literacy and satisfaction related to material presented. Summer Youth Science Camps: For youth entering grades 1-4, we offer weeklong day camps that explore the natural histories of animals, plants, rivers and rocks. For youth entering grades 5-9, we offer weeklong overnight camps that explore ecology, field research, outdoor leadership, low-impact backcountry travel, and wilderness living.
