The Intermontane Basins and Plateaus
The Intermontane Basins and Plateaus region is flanked on the west by the major Pacific coastal mountain ranges and on the east by the Rocky Mountains. In broad terms, the region consists of three distinctive subregions. The extensive Colorado Plateau encompasses parts of Colorado Utah Arizona , and New Mexico . The Columbia Plateau occupies eastern Washington , eastern Oregon, and southern Idaho . And the vast basin and range country lies between and around these two dominant plateau areas. The Intermontane region is characterized by sparse population concentrated in a few major urban centers, a relatively isolated setting between extensive mountainous areas, varied topography, arid and semi-arid climate patterns, limited water assets, and considerable mineral resources.

Colorado. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Colorado, the "Centennial State"
Abbreviation:
CO The state's name comes from a Spanish word meaning "red" or "ruddy", the color of much of the state's terrain. Called the "Centennial State", because it became the 38th state when the U.S. turned 100 in 1876, Colorado is most closely associated with the Rocky Mountains and has numerous peaks over 14,000 feet. Prospectors discovered gold in the middle of the last century, and the mining booms beginning in the late 1850s spurred Colorado's initial growth. The state's economy broadened when irrigated agriculture developed, and by the late 19th century livestock raising had become important. Early industry was based on the processing of minerals and agricultural products. In the second half of the 20th century the industrial and service sectors have expanded greatly. The state's economy is diversified and is notable for its concentration of scientific research and high-technology industries. Denver is an important financial center.
Colorado is a state of unusual natural beauty. The scenic wonders of the Rocky Mountains attract tourists in both summer and winter. In the summer and fall, visitors enjoy camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. Old mining towns and Native American cliff dwellings lure tourists interested in history. In winter, skiers visit famous Colorado resorts such as Aspen and Vail.

This thesis examines the issue of the locational orientation of U.S. Internet enterprises in recent years. The goals are to: (1) identify fast-growing cities and regions of four segments of the Information industry (publishing, motion picture/sound recording, broadcasting/telecommunication, and information/data processing) using empirical data; (2) understand the geographical clustering process of the enterprises; and (3) discuss a set of formative influences of the cluster development based on case examples in Atlanta, Austin, Denver, and Washington, D.C. regions. The study proposes a theory that this Internet cluster is a collective product of: (1) formation of new partnerships to commercialize various intangible cultural products and intellectual technologies; (2) subsequent expansion of the enterprises via intensive strategic alliances for value-adding activities at local and regional bases; and (3) creative paths and industrial evolution of enterprises of a particular locality over time. Two sets of locational findings are: (1) there are several emerging Internet clusters (such as Atlanta, Austin, Denver, Miami, Phoenix, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.) whose enterprise dynamics have spread beyond the commonly mentioned major high-technology regions (i.e., Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco); (2) yet, the enterprise dynamics and operation of headquarters and branch offices take the form of a poly-centered regional cluster which expands beyond the traditional notion of the city and suburb.

Drought diminishes river
Nature demands her share States deal for water Farmers fear dry future ... Special report: Next West: 'Phenomenal growth' creating tough choices In the beginning, the Colorado River began near Moab, Utah, at the confluence of the Green River, which flowed south out of Wyoming, and the Grand River, which flowed southwest out of Colorado. Below that point, the river took on the reddish tinge that earned it the name Colorado, or red-colored. In a survey of the region published in 1916, hydrologist E.C. LaRue said that because the Green drained a larger area than the Grand, it should be considered the upper Colorado. Most hydrologists say that's correct.

Satellite image of the Salton Basin The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state; it spans across Riverside and Imperial counties in one of California’s most scenic desert areas. As part of the Colorado Desert ecosystem, the Sea demonstrates unique features that contribute to both its appeal and to its future. The Sea occupies the lowest portion of a structural basin called the Salton Trough. Mountains, including the Santa Rosa Range to the west, Orocopia Mountains to the north and the Chocolate Mountains to the east, surround the closed basin. By virtue of its location, the Sea is a terminal lake, meaning that it has no outlets.

  • Colorado Riverbed Case The Colorado Riverbed Case, sometimes known simply as the Riverbed Case, grew out of a desire by the State of Utah to determine, legally, who owned the bed of the Colorado River. Paper documents of the Colorado Riverbed Case appear to be very rare and are known to be archived in institutions such as the Utah State Historical Society and the Utah State Archives. An abridged version of the testimony was published at one time, by a non-government printing company. It would appear that this abridged narrative, in two volumes, is quite scarce and unavailable to the general public. Approximately 2,125 pages of the Colorado Riverbed Case are digitized here from Microfilm. Exploring the Colorado River Geology Of The Plateaus Of Utah In the summers of 1875, 76 and 77, under the direction of Major John Wesley Powell, Clarence Edward Dutton (1841-1912) of the US Geological Survey, explored, studied and mapped the geology of the high plateaus region of the territory of Utah. This book is the resulting report published by the US Department of the Interior. The report includes a prefatory note by Major Powell. Harmonia Macrocosmica An atlas of the heavens, published in 1661 by Andreas Cellarius. Over two hundred pages of Latin text and thirty hand-drawn color plates have been digitized from this rare book.

GENERAL COURSE PLAN:
Hiking through spectacular red rock canyons, floating down sinuous rivers, and meeting the people that call this region home, the Canyonlands of the Colorado Plateau is a 12 credit nine-week course that immerses us in learning. The list of subjects we cover is exciting, integrating topics ranging from study desert ecology, natural history, land use history, and wilderness ethics, to Native American history and philosophy, geography, and the current environmental issues the people and this region face. This course is centered around wilderness travel in the red sandstone heart of southern Utah, taking us into some of the most remote canyons in the region. For the first three weeks we will backpack through the seldom-visited Horseshoe Canyon and Dirty Devil River Canyon. Then, we spend another week floating through the Green River's Labyrinth Canyon. These places are our classroom for developing a sense of place and gaining a firm understanding of the Colorado Plateau's natural history. We will study the incredible ecological interactions and geological phenomena that make this place unique. We spend time in the same valleys of first ancient people that walked this land, contemplating their existence. In addition, we will learn of the political and social issues that shape our personal and societal connection to the Colorado Plateau.
