Maps of Colorado Links to Historical Maps of Colorado Congress created the Territory of Colorado in 1861 in the center of the western half of the continental United States in the east-central portion of the Rocky Mountain region. The center of the state is approximately 1,500 miles west of the Eastern coast of the United States, 800 miles east of the Western coast, 650 miles south of the northern border with Canada and 475 miles north of the southern border with Mexico. Colorado is bounded on the east by the states of Kansas and Nebraska, on the north by Nebraska and Wyoming, on the west by Utah and on the south by New Mexico and Oklahoma. The boundary lines create an almost perfect rectangle, measuring approxiamtely 387 miles from east to west and 276 miles from north to south and covering 104,247 square miles, including 450 square miles of bodies of water. Colorado is the eighth largest state when measured in square miles area. Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies gradually rising westward to the front range foothills and the higher ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The Continental Divide runs from north to south through west central Colorado and bisects the state into the eastern and western slopes. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Author: Thomas D. Sisk Geographic Information Systems allow the overlaying of data layers as diverse as satellite imagery, plant surveys, and bird abundance data. Different data layers can be queried simultaneously, providing deeper insight than might be possible with traditional analytical approaches. Geographic Information systems (GIS) are the combination of spatially referenced data, appropriate computer hardware and software, and users competent to employ the data and technology to solve problems. GIS is typically used to store and analyze extensive information in a map-based format. This allows relatively easy retrieval and manipulation of information and provides new analytical capabilities based on spatial relationships between sites of interest and any combination of available data sets.
GIS as link a between geography and related sciences
Diverse data types, be they physical, biological, or cultural, can be incorporated into this landscape representation, using a topology that retains their inherent spatial relationships. These innovations have revolutionized the way we work with spatial data and they we think about maps themselves

Colorado's eastern expanses are part of the High Plains section of the Great Plains . On their western edge the plains give way to the Rocky Mountains , which run north-south through central Colorado. The mountains are divided into several ranges that make up two generally parallel belts, with the Front Range and a portion of the Sangre de Cristo Mts. on the east and the Park Range, Sawatch Mts., and San Juan Mts. on the west. Mt. Elbert (14,433 ft/4,399 m) is the highest peak in the U.S. Rocky Mts. The mountain ranges are separated by high valleys and basins called parks. These include North Park, Middle Park, South Park, Estes Park, and San Luis Park. The Continental Divide runs north-south along the Rocky Mts. in Colorado. One of the most scenic states in the country, Colorado has recreational parks including Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park with its narrow gorge cut by the Gunnison River, Dinosaur National Monument in NW Colorado, and Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve in S central Colorado. Mesa Verde National Park and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, once home to the Anasazi

Geographers can tell you that the one thing that most rivers and their adjacent
flood plains in the world have in common is that they have rich histories
associated with human settlement and development. This especially true in arid
regions which are very dependent upon water. Two excellent examples are the
Nile and the Tigris-Euphrates rivers which show use the relationship between
rivers and concentrations of people. However, the Colorado River is not such a
good example along most segments of its course. There is no continuous
transportation system that parallels the rivers course, and settlements are
clustered. The rugged terrain and entrenched river channels are the major reasons for sparse human settlement. We ask ourselves, did the Colorado River help or hinder settlement in the Western United States? As settlers began to move westward, the Southwest was considered to be a

The Gunnison Green San Juan , and Little Colorado are the main tributaries in the upper basin of the Colorado; the Gila is the chief tributary of the lower basin. Silt deposited by the Colorado has formed a great delta across the northern part of the Gulf of California, cutting off the head of the gulf; the Salton Sea is a flooded remnant of the severed part. The mouth of the river was seen by Francisco de Ulloa in 1539; the lower part was explored by Hernando de AlarcOn in 1540. The river flows through c.1,000 mi (1,610 km) of canyons, including Arizona's Grand Canyon ; many national parks, monuments, and recreational areas lie along its banks. Geography
Colorado's basic topography can be visualized by dividing the state into vertical thirds: The eastern part is plains; the midsection is high mountains; and the western third is mesa land. That's a broad simplification, of course. The central Rockies, though they cover six times the mountain area of Switzerland, are a series of high ranges running roughly north-south. East of the Continental Divide, the primary river systems are the South Platte, Arkansas, and Rio Grande, all flowing toward the Gulf of Mexico. The westward-flowing Colorado River system dominates the western part of the state, with tributary networks including the Gunnison, Dolores, and Yampa-Green rivers. In most cases, these rivers are not broad bodies of water like the Ohio or Mississippi, but streams heavy with spring and summer snowmelt, which are reduced to mere trickles during much of the year by the demands of farm and ranch irrigation. Besides agricultural use, they provide life-giving water to wildlife and offer wonderful opportunities for rafting and fishing. The forested mountains are essential to retaining precious water for the lowlands. Eleven national forests comprise 15 million acres, and there are 8 million acres controlled by the Bureau of Land Management; these are also open for public recreation. Another half million acres are within national parks, monuments, and recreation areas managed by the National Park Service. In addition to all this, Colorado has more than 40 state parks.
