Autumn Hughes, a fifth grade homeschool student from Wheat Ridge, won the Christian Home Educators of Colorado Geography Bee on Dec. 4 at Creekside Church in Centennial. Autumn won the competition by correctly answering this question: “Alaska borders the Yukon Territory and which Canadian province?” (The answer: British Columbia.)
Autumn immediately took a written examination that could qualify her for state competition. If her score is among the top 100 in the state, Hughes will advance to the Colorado Geography Bee at the University of Denver on April 1.
The state winner will advance to the National Geographic Society Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 24-25, 2005.
If you family missed this year’s bee, consider preparing for next year’s CHEC competition. National Geographic Society offers a daily quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/ax/newquizstart.html.

The Geographically Informed Person
These geography standards seek to foster the development of a geographically informed person. This means being knowledgeable about people, places, and environments, and being able to apply that knowledge. Geographically informed citizens understand the many interdependent spheres in which they live, and make informed judgments to improve their community, state, country, and world. To meet the challenges of the future, a geographically informed citizen should be able to : * Know and understand facts, concepts, and generalizations about

When the Weather is Uggianaqtuq: Inuit Observations of Environmental Change
Summary
Uggianaqtuq (pronounced OOG-gi-a-nak-took ) is a North Baffin Inuktitut word that means to behave unexpectedly, or in an unfamiliar way. From the perspective of many hunters and elders in the Arctic, the weather has been uggianaqtuq in recent years. In this interactive, multi-media CD-ROM, Inuit from two communities in Nunavut, Canada (Baker Lake and Clyde River), share their observations and perspectives on recent environmental changes. The CD-ROM is a pilot project that uses media technology, as opposed to written reports, as an alternative way to document and communicate Inuit observations and knowledge. It is a research product/report for the communities involved, as well as others interested in how Inuit are experiencing environmental change. Maps, text, photos, video and music are integrated to help illustrate the changes Inuit have observed in their environment and the impacts on their livelihoods. The integrated components allow the user to
  • search by topic or the person being interviewed view interview clips in Inuktitut with English interpretations view and print maps about environmental changes drawn by participants view short videos with scenes from the communities view summaries and photos of environmental changes and their impacts to the landscape and community life.

http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/narratives/COLORADO.htm
CLIMATE OF COLORADO TOPOGRPHIC FEATURES – Colorado Lies astride the highest mountains of the Continental Divide. Nearly rectangular, its north and south boundaries are the 41 and 37 N. parallels, and the east and went boundaries are the 102 and 109 W. meridians. It is eighth in size among the 50 states, with an area of 104,247 square miles. Although primarily a mountain state, nearly 40 percent of its area is taken up by the eastern high plains. The principal features of the Colorado geography are its inland continental location in the middle latitudes, and the mountains and ranges extending north and south approximately through the middle of the State. With an average altitude of about 6,800 feet above sea level, Colorado is the highest State in the Union. Roughly three-quarters of the Nation’s land above 10,000 feet altitude lies within its borders. The State has 54 mountains 14,000 feet or higher, and about 830 mountains between 11,000 and 14,000 feet in elevation. Emerging gradually from the plains of Kansas and Nebraska, the high plains of Colorado slope gently upward for a distance of some 200 miles from the eastern border to the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The eastern portion of the State is generally level to rolling prairie broken by occasional hills and bluffs.

Congress created the Territory of Colorado in 1861 in the center of the western half of the continental United States in the east-central portion of the Rocky Mountain region. The center of the state is approximately 1,500 miles west of the Eastern coast of the United States, 800 miles east of the Western coast, 650 miles south of the northern border with Canada and 475 miles north of the southern border with Mexico. Colorado is bounded on the east by the states of Kansas and Nebraska, on the north by Nebraska and Wyoming, on the west by Utah and on the south by New Mexico and Oklahoma. The boundary lines create an almost perfect rectangle, measuring approxiamtely 387 miles from east to west and 276 miles from north to south and covering 104,247 square miles, including 450 square miles of bodies of water. Colorado is the eighth largest state when measured in square miles area. Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies gradually rising westward to the front range foothills and the higher ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The Continental Divide runs from north to south through west central Colorado and bisects the state into the eastern and western slopes. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins.
