Geographic Coordinates of Laredo, Texas Latitude and Longitude The geographic coordinates for my home town in Latitude and Longitude are: Latitude: 27° 30' 22" N, Longtitude: 99° 30' 26" W. Source for Latitude and Longtitude given a city's name is the National Geographic Survey (2004). Notes: Latitude is represented by parallel lines that encircle the earth from north to south, with the equator as the middle, bisecting the earth into north and south latitudes. Longitudes run north-south, extending from pole to pole, much like the segments of an orange. These lines are also known as meridians. See (NASA, 2002) for more information
UTM Coordinates(Universal Transverse Mercator Coordinates) The UTM coordinates (NAD83) or other local coordinates of my home town are:
Easting (x):449902.725 meters, Northing (y): 3042596.141meters; Zone: 14, North.

U.S. SUCCESS
DEBRA R. JACKSON
Overview
This is a teacher developed unit that correlates the fifty states with Geography and Science curriculum. The unit is also developed around "Silver Burdett Ginn" (First Grade- Living in Families, Social Studies Book). This unit plan focuses on unit 6- Our Country- Lesson 3 (pages 160-163), which includes the states of Colorado, Kansas, Indiana, Virginia, and Florida.
Teacher Preparation
  • Please locate and make a transparency of the U.S.A.
  • Research each state to find and write a short story for the opening lesson.
  • Copy and color transparencies of each state, then label at least three historical, agricultural, or cultural facts.
  • Find a story about each state (i.e. Kansas- The Wizard of Oz
  • Cut out at least fourteen state patterns. These will save duplicating costs and students will recognize the physical shape by tracing and cutting out each state.
  • Timeline for this activity: anytime between February and May.
  • Enrichment: Identify each state capital, tree, flag, and flower.

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Author: Thomas D. Sisk Geographic Information Systems allow the overlaying of data layers as diverse as satellite imagery, plant surveys, and bird abundance data. Different data layers can be queried simultaneously, providing deeper insight than might be possible with traditional analytical approaches. Geographic Information systems (GIS) are the combination of spatially referenced data, appropriate computer hardware and software, and users competent to employ the data and technology to solve problems. GIS is typically used to store and analyze extensive information in a map-based format. This allows relatively easy retrieval and manipulation of information and provides new analytical capabilities based on spatial relationships between sites of interest and any combination of available data sets.
GIS as link a between geography and related sciences
Diverse data types, be they physical, biological, or cultural, can be incorporated into this landscape representation, using a topology that retains their inherent spatial relationships. These innovations have revolutionized the way we work with spatial data and they we think about maps themselves

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) What is a Geographic Information System? A GIS is a system designed to store, retrieve, manipulate, and display digitized geographic datato create maps. Although GIS is powerful, it cannot create maps automatically, just as a word processing program cannot write a paper by itself. GIS software is complicated enough that it takes some time to become sufficiently familiar with the program to be able to create a good map. However, ArcView is a very user-friendly program; the basic commands can be learned quickly by anyone. For a more in-depth explanation, go to the US Geological Survey's page on GIS GIS Programs available campus wide ArcView and ArcInfo are available in labs across campus. Contact the Computing Center and the various departments for location and availability.
