Going Further
Do you wish to explore further the abilities of using maps to illustrate Colorado's historical geography? The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) database that this project uses is free for educational and non-commercial use. A CD is available that contains: (1) a GIS database with more than 80 map layers; (2) free versions of ArcExplorer for PC and Mac; (3) selected mapping activities found on this website in ArcExplorer format, together with student worksheets and conceptual overviews; and (4) all software installation instructions. In ArcExplorer you can make maps combining layers as you wish, change map categories or legend colors and labels, and generally perform more functions. If you have another GIS software package (such as ArcView or ArcGIS), this database will work with it. Files are in ESRI shapefile format. In addition to the CD you can download the .axl project files and GIS database shapefiles HERE To order a free copy of the CD, send an email to: david.diggs@unco.edu

Maps of Colorado Links to Historical Maps of Colorado Congress created the Territory of Colorado in 1861 in the center of the western half of the continental United States in the east-central portion of the Rocky Mountain region. The center of the state is approximately 1,500 miles west of the Eastern coast of the United States, 800 miles east of the Western coast, 650 miles south of the northern border with Canada and 475 miles north of the southern border with Mexico. Colorado is bounded on the east by the states of Kansas and Nebraska, on the north by Nebraska and Wyoming, on the west by Utah and on the south by New Mexico and Oklahoma. The boundary lines create an almost perfect rectangle, measuring approxiamtely 387 miles from east to west and 276 miles from north to south and covering 104,247 square miles, including 450 square miles of bodies of water. Colorado is the eighth largest state when measured in square miles area. Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies gradually rising westward to the front range foothills and the higher ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The Continental Divide runs from north to south through west central Colorado and bisects the state into the eastern and western slopes. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins.

  • Colorado Riverbed Case The Colorado Riverbed Case, sometimes known simply as the Riverbed Case, grew out of a desire by the State of Utah to determine, legally, who owned the bed of the Colorado River. Paper documents of the Colorado Riverbed Case appear to be very rare and are known to be archived in institutions such as the Utah State Historical Society and the Utah State Archives. An abridged version of the testimony was published at one time, by a non-government printing company. It would appear that this abridged narrative, in two volumes, is quite scarce and unavailable to the general public. Approximately 2,125 pages of the Colorado Riverbed Case are digitized here from Microfilm. Exploring the Colorado River Geology Of The Plateaus Of Utah In the summers of 1875, 76 and 77, under the direction of Major John Wesley Powell, Clarence Edward Dutton (1841-1912) of the US Geological Survey, explored, studied and mapped the geology of the high plateaus region of the territory of Utah. This book is the resulting report published by the US Department of the Interior. The report includes a prefatory note by Major Powell. Harmonia Macrocosmica An atlas of the heavens, published in 1661 by Andreas Cellarius. Over two hundred pages of Latin text and thirty hand-drawn color plates have been digitized from this rare book.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Cándido Bareiro, López's ex-commercial agent in Europe, returned to Paraguay in 1869 and formed a major Lopizta faction. He also recruited General Bernadino Caballero, a war hero with close ties to López. After President Juan Bautista Gil was assassinated in 1877, Caballero used his power as army commander to guarantee Bareiro's election as president in 1878. When Bareiro died in 1880, Caballero seized power in a coup. Caballero dominated Paraguayan politics for most of the next two decades, either as president or through his power in the militia. His accession to power is notable because he brought political stability, founded a ruling partythe Coloradosto regulate the choice of presidents and the distribution of spoils, and began a process of economic reconstruction. Despite their professed admiration for Francia, the Colorados dismantled Francia's unique system of state socialism. Desperate for cash because of heavy debts incurred in London in the early postwar period, the Colorados lacked a source of funds except through the sale of the state's vast holdings, which comprised more than 95 percent of Paraguay's total land. Caballero's government sold much of this land to foreigners in huge lots. While Colorado politicians raked in the profits and themselves became large landowners, peasant squatters who had farmed the land for generations were forced to vacate and, in many cases, to emigrate. By 1900 seventy-nine people owned half of the country's land.
