Prep cadets raise money for Katrina victims
By Eddie KovskyAcademy Spirit staff Cadet candidates at the Academy Preparatory School rallied to support a fellow classmate whose family lost everything in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The cadet candidate's family was forced to flee Mississippi with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. The cadet candidate approached Maj. Richard Nesmith, the prep school's director of military training, and asked to disenroll to be with his family. "I explained that the area was closed and under martial lawhis presence would be a hindrance rather than a benefit," said Major Nesmith. Program Model
Research Trials Program Costs Facilitating Implementation ... Steps to Implementation Program Model Journal of the American Medical Association and other peer reviewed journals. Conceived by Dr. David Olds and his colleagues in the 1970s, the Nurse-Family Partnership sends specially trained nurses on weekly or bi-weekly visits to low-income, first-time mothers starting as early as possible in pregnancy (no later than the 28 th week) and continuing until their children's second birthdays. Under this voluntary program, nurses help mothers improve their health and nutrition during pregnancy, learn effective early parenting skills, and reach goals like completing school and finding employment. The program has visit by visit guidelines that provide for a client-centered approach that uses solution focused techniques with the goal of achieving enduring behavioral changes. The intervention centers around six program domains: personal health, environmental health, life course development, maternal role, family and friends and health and human services. It is the focus on these domains that enables the clients to achieve the program goals: to improve pregnancy outcomes, promote child health and development and impact parental life course development. Back to Top Research Trials Child Outcomes The Nurse-Family Partnership has been carefully tested through ongoing, longitudinal randomized trials in Elmira, New York (begun in 1977), and in Memphis, Tennessee (begun in 1990). A third trial in Denver, Colorado has been concluded; the data is being analyzed; and results will soon be published.

Message from Donna E. Shalala Secretary of Health and Human Services
The first, most enduring responsibility of any society is to ensure the health and well-being of its children. It is a responsibility to which multiple programs of the Department of Health and Human Services are dedicated and an arena in which we can claim many remarkable successes in recent years. From new initiatives in child health insurance and Head Start, to innovative approaches to child care, to the investment in medical research that has ameliorated and even eliminated the threat of many once lethal childhood diseases, we have focused directly and constructively on the needs of millions of children. Through programs designed to enhance the strength and resiliency of families and family members across the life span and through our investments in diverse community resources, we are also helping to enhance the lives and enrich the opportunities of millions more of our children. Although we can take rightful pride in our accomplishments on behalf of U.S. youths, we can and must do more. The world remains a threatening, often dangerous place for children and youths. And in our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence.

Compensation for the Early Childhood Workforce
Child care and preschool programs have difficulty attracting and keeping good individuals to work with young children. A third of program staff leave the field each year, primarily due to the lack of adequate compensation-low salaries, few benefits, and difficult working conditions. Research has clearly shown that the skill and commitment of the adults in early childhood programs directly affects the quality of care and education given to children. Below are some resources to help advocates and policy makers to improve the compensation of the early childhood workforce, and thus the quality of services for children and families. This area of our web site is a work in progress. Examples of other compensation initiatives and new resources are welcomed and can be sent to pubaff@naeyc.org

All these skills improve your ability to understand or develop new ideas and to present them to others. The content component of General Education is designed to give you a sense of the complexity and integrated nature of knowledge. It focuses on the paradigms and patterns of inquiry of many disciplines and the fundamentally multidisciplinary character of true understanding. The many different approaches to subject matter and problem-solving practiced in the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences, and mathematics all contribute to an appreciation of diversity and the value of inquiry. The interdisciplinary, multicultural, and international courses provide a grounding in the wealth of human experience and the necessity of taking this diversity into account throughout our lives. Together, the skills and content components of the General Education program provide the framework for lifelong learning and personal growth. They provide an understanding of and perspective on our history, current events, and future challenges. This foundation increases the ability of students to make more effective use of the knowledge they acquire in their majors, in their minors, and in the other parts of their undergraduate program.
