People With Disabilities Work In Agriculture
For most of the over three million Americans earning their livings in agriculture, the work is not just their livelihood, it is their way of life; a productive and satisfying way of life of which they are very proud.
The Problem
Agricultural production is hazardous. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates that more than 200,000 farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers experience lost-work-time injuries and occupational illnesses every year, approximately five percent of which have serious and permanent results. Off-the-farm injuries; health conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, or cancer; and aging disable tens of thousands more. The Breaking New Ground Resource Center estimates that more than 500,000 persons working in agriculture have physical disabilities that interfere with their ability to perform essential tasks on the farm or ranch. Additionally, thousands of children born into agricultural families have disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and epilepsy. Physical and attitudinal barriers often prevent these children from participating fully in farm and ranch operations, and from engaging in social and recreational activities enjoyed by other rural youth. The majority of people with disabilities who work or live in agricultural settings want to continue to do so despite their disabilities. All too often, however, they are frustrated in their attempts. Rural isolation, limited personal resources, gaps in rural service delivery systems, and inadequate access to agriculture-oriented assistance are among the obstacles they face.

Creating a Successful Staff Development Program
What are the keys to a successful staff development program? This look at two award-winning programs at Hungerford School in Staten Island, New York, and at Montview Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado might provide some insight. Ask Dr. Mary McInerney, the principal of Hungerford School in Staten Island, New York, what makes the school's staff development program successful, and she replies, "The staff. They are responsible." Dr. McInerney credits a unique degree of staff involvement for creating the teacher development program that made Hungerford one of six schools and two school districts nationwide to be honored this year by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley as part of

This course explores the curriculum, instructional strategies, and foundations for teaching science K-12. It presents wide variety of hands-on activities and strategies for creating and implementing science curriculum. 3 Credits - In this era of "Standards" for education, schools often get mired down in helping students meet the minimum standards required to graduate. Unfortunately the students with the greatest potential are not served well by this movement. Good teachers are be much more interested in helping gifted and talented soar beyond these standards to the full height of their potential. Science and Environmental Education provide a wonderful vehicle to challenge our school's best and brightest students. The course is developed from the premise that all students can benefit from a science curriculum that challenges them to think and explore the world more carefully and more deeply.

2. There will be an educator meeting at the VISION office tomorrow, Tuesday, September 20 from 5-7. There will be informal networking/dinner time followed by discussions using the Open Space Technology format. RC’s are more than welcome to attend!
3. The Local Fire and Ambulance are hosting a fundraiser for Katrina victims on Sunday, September 25. A pancake breakfast will be held at the Heritage Hall in Hotchkiss, followed by music and entertainment all day. For more information, call 872-4303.
4. We discussed the possible charges for VISION workshops and other classes and events that are free to VISION community learners and parents. CHAPTER 2: TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Alabama: Making the Case for Educational Technology
Because of a shortage in revenue in FY03, the Alabama legislature cut many educational programs, one of which was technology. In fact, state funding for technology to the local school districts was cut from $181 per teacher to zero. At the annual Alabama Education Technology Association Symposium, district technology leaders and superintendents met in roundtable discussions concerning the funding crisis. Their discussions led to the exploration of the question, "Do our leaders really understand what would happen in our schools if the technology was suddenly turned off?" The concept of a "Technology Blackout Day" was conceived. After further discussions it was decided that turning off all of the technology for a day would be unsafe to the school children. Therefore, a more positive approach was taken to educate key decision makers on the value of technology in our educational system. A

Introduction
Growth and change have created additional challenges and opportunities for many Colorado communities. Recent research has shown that growth, budgetary concerns, and economic development needs are the most pressing county-level issues in Colorado. Land use issues and increasing demands on social services, particularly for aging and immigrant resident populations, were shown to be the most challenging growth concerns facing Colorado counties (CDLG, 1999). Tools and strategies exist for communities to plan for and guide their futures. A variety of public and private, state, federal, and local agencies might provide training, insight, or information to their clientele or constituencies regarding the tools and strategies available to them to manage their natural resources toward both private and collective objectives.
Approach
In the spring of 1999, a skills, abilities, and needs assessment of Colorado professionals with agriculture and natural resource managing responsibilities was undertaken. Colorado State University Cooperative Extension, Colorado State Forest Service, and American Farmland Trust agreed to collaborate on survey design, mailing lists, finance, analysis, dissemination of results, and follow-up programming from this research effort.
