Information Sharing to Make Colorado Schools Safer
In 1994, an amended federal law opened the door for Colorado to enact a law this year to allow school and criminal justice officials to share information about violent and disruptive students. The new law is intended to help prevent future school violence. Will more states follow Colorado and the other states that have enacted this law? A year after the Columbine High School tragedy, the Colorado legislature passed a law revoking prior privacy constraints that have hindered teachers and police from sharing information about troubled students. A 1994 amendment to a federal law allowed Colorado to pass the new law. Without a state law that specifically provides for a juvenile justice exemption from the federal privacy act, federal law requires schools and criminal justice officials to obtain either the child's and parent's consent or a court subpoena to obtain records. The federal law requires that information be kept confidential because disclosure of certain information could have an impact on student and family privacy.

Parent Resources Getting Started Welcome Parents Why your child needs assessments? Parent Testimony about Assessment ... An Open Letter to Parents [ Image here ]
Assessment: Meeting Colorado's Standards Why Assess? How do I do it? Professional practice supports the need to assess children at specific intervals. District policies support assessment. And, of course, IDEA requires that children with special needs receive assessments at prescribed intervals. The assessment protocols that are used may be prescribed by the district, by the state, or they may be chosen by the teacher, the speech/language pathologist, and/or the educational audiologist. Over the past several years, the Colorado Department of Education formulated a plan to assess all children with hearing loss using specific assessment procedures. These procedures are designed specifically for children with hearing acuity that is not within the normal range. The FAMILY Assessment is used for children from birth until 36 months of age. The Pre-CIPP is used for children in preschool. The CIPP is used for children who are school-aged. Each assessment will be reviewed individually in this article. So, please read on! All of the assessments are supported by grant funds and carry no additional cost to families, therapists, or schools. These assessments constitute the assessment battery used for state accountability. Please refer to the table to learn more about the specific assessments. And, be sure to ask your interventionist, therapist, preschool teacher, or members of your child's education team about them.

CSAPs are sent home to parents with a detailed diagnostic report that explains In the last three years alone, funding for K12 education in colorado
http://www.fund4colorado.org/cer/parentsFAQ.html
1. How does the CSAP help schools and students? The CSAP is a tool for teachers and parents to use to address the educational needs of the student. CSAPs are sent home to parents with a detailed diagnostic report that explains their child's academic strengths and areas that need improvement. This allows parents to work with teachers to better understand the unique needs of the child. 2. Will the CSAP affect my child's grade, ability to graduate or move to the next grade? No. Your child will take the CSAP test each year in grades 3 through 10 in reading and writing and grades 5 through 10 in math. In grade 11 your child will take the ACT which may be used to apply for college and will be recorded on his or her transcript. No child is denied advancement to the next grade or graduation from high school based on his or her results. CSAP scores are not used on a school's accountability report These assessments, which were written by Colorado teachers, provide you and your child's teacher a diagnostic tool of what your child knows and is able to do based on the academic standards for his or her grade level. It will provide the teacher with your child's strengths and weaknesses. The assessment will enable the teacher to provide targeted instruction and help for your child.
3. Are schools spending too much time preparing for the CSAP - are they "teaching to the test"?
