Special Needs Swim
What is Special Needs Swim?
SNS is program where student volunteers interact with community members both children and adults with a variety of disabilities. Each week students and their partners spend an hour in the pool for exercise, games and friendship. These sessions are oriented towards developing relationships, improving body coordination and skills, and most importantly having fun in the water! Participants gain exercise, friendships and increased awareness of issues concerning people with disabilities. Volunteers also meet to discuss and reflect on their service. When:
Sunday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 pm. Volunteers must be willing to make a weekly Sunday commitment for the school year (excluding school breaks).

Talking with Teens About the Colorado School Shootings

THE SCENE Your 15-year-old is staring in horror at scenes of the terrified students in Littleton, Colorado, on the television screen. "My God," she says. "That could be me." WHAT TO SAY
As adults in Littleton rally to support the young victims of the shooting, teenagers all over the country will need help coping with the tragedy. The best thing that we can do for our adolescent children is talk with them honestly about the shootings and about violence in America. And listen carefully to what they say back to us. Teenagers like and need a lot of privacy, so they may not be willing to share many details of their personal lives. However, let them know you're available, and feel free to talk with them about your feelings concerning the shootings. Here are some examples of what you might say. I think this is terrifying.
Let kids know honestly how you feel about what happened in Littleton. If you talk freely about your feelings, you're giving them permission to talk freely as well. Support your teen's feelings. If they seem indifferent, talk with them about how hard it is to cope with painful feelings. I feel awful for those students and their families.

Submitted to: The National Center on Outcomes Research Submitted By: The Center for Outcome Analysis June, 1998 Verbatim transcripts available on links at the bottom of this page On May 18 and 19, 1998, three focus groups and one in-depth interview were conducted in the State of Colorado. This was the fifth of six states involved in the project by the National Center on Outcomes Research. The purpose of the focus groups is to obtain preliminary information that will assist in the development of a national consumer survey. Once again, the fifth round of focus groups consisted of relatively homogenous groupings of individuals, both people with disabilities and parents/caretakers of people with disabilities. Additionally, one in-depth interview with an adult self-advocate was conducted. The third group consisted of ten preteen and teenaged self-advocates, seven girls and three boys. Their ages ranged from 11 to 19. Two of the girls were Latino/Hispanic, one of the girls was Black, and four of the girls and all three of the boys were White. Additionally, one in-depth interview was conducted with a Caucasian female self-advocate with cerebral palsy. The groups were conducted in a similar fashion to the previous four, with facilitation by Kathy Ficker-Terrill. Anita Yuskauskas was the Analytic Observer. The Facilitator posed the same three questions to each group and to the interviewee. The questions were initially shared with participants via an invitation letter, and then again at the start of the session. The questions are:

Student Study Process The Child Study process is one in which teachers, special educators, parents, and other parties come together to determine what an individual child's needs are, how he or she can best be successful, and what interventions should be implemented to ensure that success. The Child Study process in District Twenty involves the following process:
  • A teacher, staff member or parent identifies a need of a child.
  • The teacher tries interventions which seem the most appropriate.
  • If these interventions are unsuccessful, or not successful to the desired extent, the teacher can bring the child before the Child Study Committee.
  • The teacher fills out the Child Study paperwork.
  • The committee schedules a meeting.
  • The Child Study Committee determines what other interventions are merited, other than those which have already been tried by the teacher.
    • Committee members contribute ideas
    • Other sources are consulted as appropriate
    • School resources are utilized as appropriate
    • The committee schedules another meeting for the child after a predetermined interval.

Dr. Robin Brewer is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado. She was formerly a Principal Consultant at the Colorado Department of Education, where she coordinated the Behavior Support Teams for the state of Colorado and the Colorado Autism Task Force. Dr. Brewer teaches undergraduate and graduate level classes at the university, including a class on Strategies for Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. She has taught special and general education classes K-12 in Oklahoma and Colorado, and worked with adults with developmental disabilities in vocational and residential settings. She has presented at national conferences and throughout Colorado on autism, behavioral strategies, and accommodations for students in general education settings. Dr. Brewer completed her Doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado focusing on behavioral support for students with multiple needs.

POPULATION Recent state and local follow-up studies confirm this unexplainable attrition rate among students with handicaps. These studies also strongly suggest that the dropout rate among students receiving special education services significantly exceeds the dropout rate among the general school-age population. The St. Paul Public Schools conducted a retrospective examination of the records of 4,500 students in attendance between 1974 and 1977 who left school prior to graduation. They found that up to 80% of the youths who dropped out may have been eligible for special education services. Hippolitus (1980) cited the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped as documenting the dropout rate for special education students at five to six times the rate of youths without handicaps. IMPLICATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The implications of these findings have special significance for educational policy and practice. More systematic procedures for identifying potential dropouts and better follow-through in providing comprehensive programs that retain students with handicaps must be addressed.
