HOME Academy of Charter Schools Westminster The Academy of Charter Schools , an Adams County District 12 Charter School, is building a 125,000 square foot school for Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade in Westminster, Colorado. Construction on the $13 million project began in May 2004, with the school opening in August, 2005. The site is located at 120th Avenue and Lowell, in Westminster. The Academy of Charter Schools was chartered in 1994 as one of Colorado’s original charter schools. From an initial enrollment of 230 students that Academy has grown to nearly 900 students today. With the construction of a new facility, the Academy plans to grow to 1150 to 1200 students. The Academy has established LEED as a primary goal for the project. "The unique nature of funding charter schools requires charters to save monies wherever possible," said Michael Barile, the Operations Manager for the Academy. "Savings realized from energy conservation measures and design will be utilized in school curriculum and programs," said Barile. Barile has extensive prior experience in school construction and finance, energy efficiency, and cost effective best practices, and is a strong proponent of LEED. Because of the Academy's commitment to LEED, the Governor's Office of Energy Management and Conservation awarded the school a grant for $20,000 in December 2003. The grant can be used by the Academy to pay for integrated design consulting services to help implement the LEED rating system and help the school get the best facilities possible.
