The statistics used to understand the condition of working Americans also improved over the course of the century, as we discuss in these articles excerpted from the Report on the American Workforce (U.S. Department of Labor, 2001). Comparison of the American workforce at the end of the 20th century with that at the beginning shows numerous changes. Some of these are dramatic; others less so. Many of these changes are well known, but some are not. In certain cases, statistical data are lacking to make quantitative comparisons between the beginning and end of the century; but most of the changes are discernible, nevertheless.
