The bewildering nature of electronic resources, overflowing with format changes, provider changes and vendor mergers, makes an objective assessment of these products difficult and challenging. This resource is intended to assist librarians with collection development responsibilities and interest in the area of women's and gender studies. It presents data on commercial databases available with updated information on scope, content, cost, etc. Available reviews of these products are also listed. American Studies Certificate Program
To receive the American Studies Certificate a student must complete 18 credit hours from the listing of classes below. International Exchange Students who are American Studies students at their home university, or who have taken American culture and society classes in the past, may be able to transfer classes from their home universities' to count for credit towards classes that are required for the American Studies Certificate Program. Students will work with the American Studies Certificate advisor to determine transferability of credit. Students will need to submit descriptions of classes taken at their home university for evaluation. International Exchange Students attending NAU for one year will be able to complete the program in one year of study; a typical year of study at full-time equals 24 credit hours. In addition, a student attending NAU for one semester, who is able to transfer sufficient credit towards the American Studies Certificate requirements, may be able to finish the requirements in one semester of study. A minimum number of credits per semester is 12 credits but students may take as many as 18 credit hours per semester. Students whose degree at their home university is American Studies may find many of the courses listed below applicable to meeting their home degree requirements while also fulfilling requirements for the NAU American Studies Certficate.

In this ambitious volume, Hans Christian Gull[Symbol Not Transcribed]v presents archaeological and ethnographic data that span the entire culture history of Greenland from the arrival of the Thule people until the middle of the 18th century, by which time their descendants were known simply as Greenlanders. Most of the archaeological data described in detail derive from the 17th and 18th centuries in southwest Greenland, but in his analysis Gull[Symbol Not Transcribed]v also draws heavily on previously published data from throughout Greenland and Arctic Canada. In the first chapter. Gull[Symbol Not Transcribed]v summarizes what he identifies as the prevailing model of Greenland Thule culture history. Beginning in northwest Greenland, Thule spread around the island in both directions. The expansion along the west coast entered southwest Greenland in the 15th century, following the depopulation of the Norse settlements there, and then advanced northward along the east coast. Another expansion took place eastward, around the north coast of Greenland. The two Thule populations ultimately met in northeast Greenland in the 16th century. Gull[Symbol Not Transcribed]v then cites linguistic and archaeological evidence suggesting that this simple model is inadequate, and that a more complex series of population movements and interactions must be invoked to explain the Thule history of Greenland.

These brave people left their homes in England to escape religious persecution by immigrating to America! What if you and your family felt the need to fly to Jupiter and attempt to start a new life? Your family members would have no idea where they were going, what type of climate they would find, what they were going to eat, or if there were any hostile creatures living there already. Wouldn't that be scary? This was a scary but adventurous time in American history. Were the Pilgrims the first people to inhabit America? Actually, the Native American Indian tribes had already lived in what came to be called America for hundreds of years before the first European settlers immigrated in 1620. View Teacher Notes The Task In this activity you will be discovering about the early Americans by looking at a recreation of Plymouth Plantation in 1627. Also, you will be looking at a variety of maps, both modern and maps from the 17th century. Using these sources, you will be answering questions, discovering life in early America and writing a series of letters. After taking a virtual tour of Plymouth Plantation you will assume the character of a child who traveled to the New World aboard the Mayflower. The child you are portraying is an actual histroical person who came from England to the New World in 1620. As many Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower did, you will send letters to your friends and family back in England. In your letters you will explain what Plymouth is like and you will advise your family back in England as to what they should bring with them when they make their journey over.

American Studies
The Department of American Studies provides undergraduates with an opportunity to explore and interpret the American experience from multi-disciplinary perspectives such as the fine arts, humanities, and social sciences. In addition to support for undergraduate study and teaching the library strives towards providing resources that encourage and facilitate the interdisciplinary study and research of the American experience. Three library endowments support the collections in three distinct areas of American studies: the Sacher Family Endowment for Southern United States History and Culture, the Jodi and Ivan Ludington, Jr.Family Endowment for the Study of the Great Lakes and the Twist Family Endowment for American Studies, focusing on the American presidency. This handout is intended to help researchers in general, and users of the and Perkins Library in particular, find demographic data for the United States and its geographic subdivisionsstates, counties, metropolitan areas, Congressional Districts, etc. In addition to total population, the resources included here present data for basic demographic characteristics, such as age, race, sex, and so on. Users looking for detailed health, education , or economic statistics Bureau of the Census , U.S. Department of Commerce. Commercial polling data are not included. If you are new to U.S. demographic research, you should first take a look at the list of major sources , below. There you will find information on basic tools and materials. To narrow down your search and pinpoint a source that contains the information you want, it may be useful to ask some or all of the following questions:

May 3, 1999 From the beginnings of civilization people have been concerned about the quality and safety of foods and medicines. In 1202, King John of England proclaimed the first English food law, the Assize of Bread, which prohibited adulteration of bread with such ingredients as ground peas or beans. Regulation of food in the United States dates from early colonial times. Federal controls over the drug supply began with inspection of imported drugs in 1848. The following chronology describes some of the milestones in the history of food and drug regulation in the United States.
Eleven physicians meet in Washington, D.C., to establish the U.S. PHARMACOPEIA , the first compendium of standard drugs for the United States.
DRUG IMPORTATION ACT
passed by Congress requires U.S. Customs Service inspection to stop entry of adulterated drugs from overseas.
PRESIDENT LINCOLN
appoints a chemist, Charles M. Wetherill, to serve in the new Department of Agriculture. This was the beginning of the Bureau of Chemistry, the predecessor of the Food and Drug Administration.
PETER COLLIER
, chief chemist, U.S. Department of Agriculture, recommends passage of a national food and drug law, following his own food adulteration investigations. The bill was defeated, but during the next 25 years more than 100 food and drug bills were introduced in Congress.

Bush unveils plans for US colonial office
By Bill Van Auken 21 May 2005 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The president picked a sympathetic audience for unveiling his plan: the International Republican Institute, a constituent part of the National Endowment for Democracy. The NED was created more than 20 years ago to use the Republican Party, the Democrats, big business and the AFL-CIO labor bureaucracy as conduits for funding that previously was provided covertly by the CIA to destabilize foreign governments or promote US-backed movements. In a report Friday citing interviews with former US occupation officials and internal memos, the Los Angeles Times focused on the month of June 2004, when the Coalition Provisional Authority was formally dissolved and a puppet Iraqi regime installed. The Times So egregious is the theft of Iraqi and US funding that the government has found itself compelled to launch a criminal investigation into suspected embezzlement by US officials in connection with some $100 million of the funds designated for reconstruction projects that went missing.

Much Needed and Overdue At a general level, the book makes an extremely important and strategic contribution. Although there is now an extensive literature on the history of the non-ferrous metals industries, it is all rather specialized and localized and there have been very few attempts at this kind of national overview. Hyde has given the subject exactly what it needs to project it onto a wider stage and it is to be hoped that others will attempt similar studies of other sectors of the industry. Since they all share so much that is common in terms of technology, labor, managerial expertise, finance, etc. this might also result in a much-needed single study of the sector as a whole. Cradle to Grave (Oxford, 1991)undoubtedly the most important general work on the Michigan industry to appear in recent yearsno reference is made to it in the footnotes to the chapters dealing with that region. It is almost as though what we have here was conceived and constructed in separate parts at a considerably earlier date and only recently assembled into the current whole. But all of these are minor quibbles on what, overall, is re ally a very excellent and worthwhile piece of work. In particular, it will fulfill the strategic function of bringing more closely together the historians of mining and smelting with the mainstream of business history, to the considerable

Students wishing to earn a certificate in African American Studies can do so by taking at least the 2000 level introductory course, one upper-class seminar at the 4000 level or higher, and six other courses as a coherent package of study. Besides the two courses of 6 hours required in the Institute core, the certificate directs a student to focus for a total of 12 hours in either:
  • History and Culture (Folklore, Religion, African American Civilization, and Diaspora Studies, including the Caribbean, South America, and sub-Saharan Africa);
  • Behavioral and Social Inquiry (Psychology, Sociology, Speech, and Political Science), or
  • Literature, Language, and the Arts (Drama, Cinema, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Music, Swahili, Romance Languages, and English). At least two courses of three semester hours each (divisional total of six hours) must be selected from two of the three divisions in African American Studies. The requirement makes for a grand total of at least twelve divisional hours outside of a student's selected division of specialty in African American Studies. The following list contains all courses currently available through the Institute for African American Studies.
