    * AMERICAN CULTURE IN THE COLD WAR ERA
4 CR TuTh 8:30 - 9:50 D33E Introductory Faculty: Kathryn Ratcliff Often referred to as the placid decade, the 1950's in the United States was a period of enormous growth, energy, and variety. In politics, the onset of the Cold War and the expansion of the Red Scare coexisted with the rise to prominence of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and the modern civil rights movement. On the cultural scene, intellectuals debated the costs of mass suburbanization and white collar conformity while Jack Kerouac and the beats were setting the tone for a new generation of writers and Thelonius Monk and Charlie Parker were introducing a new kind of jazz. Popular culture celebrated the return of women to the home while an unprecedented number of married women participated in the paid labor force. This course will explore the complexities of the Cold War Era, attempting to idenitfy the significant and enduring cultural and political shifts that were taking place beneath the sometimes deceptively calm surface of fifties America. Prerequisite : None THE FAMILY IN U.S. HISTORY: 1600-1900

The Ludu Kyi-bwa-yay Press was established in Mandalay as a radical left-wing publishing house by Ludu U Hla and his wife, Daw Amar, in 1938. Ludu U Hla was a pioneering Burmese journalist, would-be social reformer, social historian, and, most of all, recorder of folk-tales. Daw Amar began her writing career in 1938 as a translator, mostly of anti-Western works; in 1964 she began a series of major works dealing with Burmese traditional performing arts and the history and culture of Upper Burma and of Mandalay . U Hla died in 1982, and in March 1984 much of the press was destroyed in the great Mandalay fire. Nevertheless, the press resumed publishing in 1987 under the direction of Daw Amar and despite continued strict government censorship has remained in operation until the present. The latest book in Ludu U Hla's folktale series appeared posthumously in 1996. This article is followed by a translation of a short biography of Ludu U Hla written by Daw Amar.

    • to identify the elements of prejudice
    • to recognize the "rungs" of negative actions
    Materials:
    • Video, Shadows Between Friends
    Procedures:
  • Ask students about the way in which infants and small children learn social behavior. (By following modes and models of behavior around them). Ask some of the positive and negative features of learning human behavior in this way. Is human behavior consistent in all societies? Tell students that prejudice is learned, not inherited; there are no genes or chromosomes of prejudice. People can be prejudiced against anything-even bathtubs with legs. A child learns his prejudices from his surroundings, his environment, the total situation in which he happens to live.
  • The sociologist Gordon Allport has described a kind of ladder of "negative actions" that spring from prejudice. The teacher might want to place these "rungs" on the board and ask students for examples of each.

Abstract
This paper offers practical help to the busy professional who lacks the time to search the Internet for authoritative and appropriate information. The intended audience for this presentation ranges from upper elementary to junior college school librarians, public librarians, and teachers who are interested in using the Internet to help students with reports and homework assignments. The focus is on hard-to-find information, and the factors that were considered in selecting the sites were currency, availability, reading level, language, source reliability and subject popularity. All the sites that were selected for the presentation were evaluated by librarians who work in a large public library, using guidelines established by professional sources.
Introduction
The Internet is not an easy tool to use at a reference desk. While offering seemingly limitless information, search results are not always comprehensive, readily found, or easily validated . Speed of connectivity and a lack of organization also present challenges. However, what makes it worthwhile in the reference arsenal are the benefits it offers over traditional sources: breadth (not aways depth), currency, statistics, and primary sources. Consequently, a busy library must determine how to use the net's strengths without being snared in its problems. One answer is to impose a structure based on your organization's reference needs.

Brian - I am curious about reading/writing workshops and how I could use them. Kathy/5/IA - Do you use the Nancie Atwell method or something else? Kathy/5/IA - What grade level do you teach, Brian? Brian - I am currently doing my student teaching in a 5th/6th grade social studies classroom Kathy/5/IA - Do the kids in your class use a text book for SS? Paulette - I don't think I really can say I use one particular method. I've done a lot of reading and tried to incorporate several ideas into something that is doable for me. I like the freedom kids have when using a Reading Workshop. It gives all levels of readers a chance to read at an enjoyable level. Brian - Yes, they do

Session 14 Feb.5,1999 Integrating Technology into the Classroom FAQ for Teachers of Primary and Secondary Students By Mary Connors , M.A. How to deal with varying computer skills of my students? ~ Addressing a fear of computers. Avoid telling your students that the computer is easy to use for everyone. This may make the child who is having difficulty feel inept and discouraged. It is not easy for all students to grasp the logic of computer programs. Bring some humor and understanding to a potentially humiliating experience. Let the student know that in time they will, step-by-step, become more comfortable with the computer. Positive reinforcement can never be overestimated in the learning process. ~ Allow students to work together. ~ Educational activities online. Use educational games and positive feedback to ease the reluctant student to try their hand at computer assisted activities. Arrange a fun class activity on the computer such as an online treasure search or other educational game to include all students in teams or pairs of varying computer skills. Competition can be motivational for some students, however some students are stressed by competition, so be sensitive to this dynamic in your classroom. ~ Clarify what a computer can and cannot do.

The odds of one of your ancestors having slipped aboard an emigrant ship unnoticed are slim; the odds of one of your ancestors having left the ship unnoticed are slimmer still. Once you have completed all of your American research, the next step backward in time is to attempt to recross the bridge that your ancestors traveled over to reach America. Naturally, this bridge is a bridge of water. However, like any steel bridge it had two sides consisting of a port of embarkation and a port of entry. You will want to learn the how, when, where and why of the reasons your ancestors came to America. The logical place to start is with passenger arrival records and work backward.
