Melosi. Baltimore, Md.: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999. xii + 578 pp. Illustrations, notes, bibliographic essay, index. $59.95. In The Sanitary City: Urban Infrastructure in America from Colonial Times to the Present, Martin V. Melosi has written an intellectual and policy-oriented account of the efforts of urban leaders to foster control of the built environment and enhance the health of citizens. Melosi develops themes that are at once original, profoundly sophisticated, and occasionally underdeveloped. Melosi's focus is on the physicians, engineers, and politicians who brought the urban infrastructure into existence, starting in the colonial era and extending up to the 1990s.

History for Dummies

The troubling popularity of The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History.

Listen
to this story on NPR's Day to Day Several weeks ago, a history book called The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History , by Thomas E. Woods Jr., a hitherto unknown assistant professor at Suffolk County Community College in New York, appeared on the New York Times paperback best-seller chart. User-friendly in its layout, the book is chock-full of pull-quotes, subheads, bulleted lists, short sentences, and two- and three-sentence paragraphs. It presents a brisk tour of U.S. history from Colonial to Clintonian times, filtered through a lens of far-right dogma, circa 1939. It's History for Dummies meets John T. Flynn . It's published, naturally, by Regnery The book's title gives a clue to its agenda. For some time now the term "politically correct" has been used to delegitimize any left-of-center position, even those that aren't very far left or particularly outrageous. (See, for example, this letter to the editor, published last July in the

Index Bibliography/Credits Next Chapter "Heaven and earth never agreed better to frame a place for man's habitation." John Smith, founder of the colony of Virginia, 1607 Within the span of a hundred years, in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a tide of emigration -one of the great folk wanderings of history-swept from Europe to America. This movement, impelled by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation out of a wilderness and, by its nature, shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent. Today, the United States is the product of two principal forces-the immigration of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics and the impact of a new country which modified these distinctly European cultural traits. Of necessity, colonial America was a projection of Europe. Across the Atlantic came successive groups of Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Scots, Irishmen, Dutchmen, Swedes, and many others who attempted to transplant their habits and traditions to the new world. But, inevitably, the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America, the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent caused significant changes. These changes were gradual and at first scarcely visible. But the result was a new social pattern which, although it resembled European society in many ways, had a character that was distinctly American.

Colonial America 1988 – present Edit this box Starting in the late 16th century , the English began to colonize North America . The first attempts, notably the Colony of Roanoke , resulted in failure, but successful colonies were soon established. The colonists who came to the New World were by no means a homogeneous band, but rather a variety of different social and religious groups which settled in different locations on the seaboard. The Quakers of Pennsylvania , the Puritans of New England , the gold-hungry settlers of Jamestown , and the convicts of Georgia each came to the new continent for vastly different reasons, and they created colonies with very different social religious political , and economic structures. To summarize the areas of development in colonial America, historians typically recognize four regions in the lands that later became the eastern United States. Listed from north to south, they are: New England , the Middle Colonies , the Chesapeake Bay Colonies and the Southern Colonies . Some historians add a fifth region – the frontier had certain unifying features no matter what sort of colony it sprang from. By the late
