This teachers' guide includes a variety of materials designed to help you prepare your class for a visit to the collection of American art at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and The San Francisco Foundation, we are pleased to offer you information about twenty-four objects that represent American art from colonial times to the Civil War period. The descriptive information about the artworks is accompanied by lesson plans which serve to enhance the 5th-grade American history curriculum. This selection of objects was assembled to reflect the high quality of the works of art in the de Young collection. The degree of interest to 5th-grade students was also strongly considered in choosing pieces for this teachers' guide. Clearly, the works of art do not represent the full range of artists who were women, indigenous people, or people of non-European backgrounds who lived in America from the 1670s to the 1880s. The de Young Museum is committed to broadening its collection, and as the American art collection expands to represent a more diverse group of artists, we will make additions to this publication. The activities and research projects suggested in this guide give a more inclusive and complete picture of America during this time. We hope that you enjoy the adventure and challenge of making America's history and culture come alive for your students.

It looks at the ideas and institutions that have formed the foundations of consumer society; the ways these have changed over time; and the ways ordinary men and women have embraced, shaped, or resisted consumerism. We will begin by locating the origins of contemporary consumer culture in the American colonies, and analyze its relationship to the American Revolution. We will then examine the development of contemporary consumer culture, focusing on the rise of advertising and marketing, consumer boycotts, the relationship between consumers and the national state, and commercialization of public space. By the end of the course students should be able to understand varied past and contemporary critiques and uses of consumer society. Active class participation is required. READINGS Lawrence B. FAMILY
For over three centuries, Americans have bemoaned the decline of the family. Even in Puritan New England, community elders decried the growing fragility of marriage, the selfishness of parents, and the rebelliousness of children. Nevertheless, the American family has endured by adapting to changing economic and social environments. In colonial times, the family was the basic unit of society. It educated children, cared for the elderly and infirm, transferred occupational skills to the young, and functioned as the economic center of production. All members participated in the family's support. Wives cooked, laundered, spun yarn, wove cloth, and made clothing. They gardened, milked cows, brewed beer, harvested fruit, kept chickens, and preserved food. Children had work responsibilities before age seven. All individuals were required to live within a family. In Puritan New England, bachelors and single women paid special taxes and were forced to enter existing households as a boarder or servant; married couples who lived apart from each other were fined. Seventeenth-century Americans conceived of the family as a hierarchical unit—a "little commonwealth"—in which the father was endowed with patriarchal authority. He alone sat on a chair (others sat on benches, chests, or stools). Child-rearing manuals were addressed to him. Legally, his consent was necessary for his children to marry, and his control over inheritance kept grown sons dependent, often unable to set up their own households for years. Three colonies made it a capital offense for children to curse or strike their fathers.

Past Meeting 12 Inheritance in America: From Colonial Times to the Present This discussion was led by Betty Barbour and was held on January 24, 2000. Those coming to America brought their own customs from their various countries of origin. In many cases people did not make wills. If there are no wills, then the state (or colonies) made the decision as to distribution of the estate. In some cases it is better for genealogists to refer to probates rather than wills. This is because in probates, an attempt is made to locate all family survivors. In wills, the only relatives or persons mentioned are those that the person making the will wanted to include. Inheritance probably played a more important role in the ecomomy during colonial times than in any other period in American history. The economy depended on the "family firm" or farm almost exclusively and inheritance determined the distribution among family members. Too wide a distribution of resources and control might jeopardize business operations. Keeping a firm or farm intact had its appeal. Betty used the following definitions:
  • Testate . A will is made. The maker of the will could ignore laws of distribution if he wished. Intestate . No will was left. The laws of the colony or state took over the distribution. Intestacy Laws . Enacted by each colony or state. Probate . The County Court was responsible for the distribution of propery after the death of its owner, whether there was a will or not.

    Course Description
This course will consider the ways in which technology, broadly defined, has contributed to the building of American society from colonial times to the present. This course has three primary goals: to train students to ask critical questions of both technology and the broader American culture of which it is a part; to provide an historical perspective with which to frame and address such questions; and to encourage students to be neither blind critics of new technologies, nor blind advocates for technologies in general, but thoughtful and educated participants in the democratic process.
