RELATED STORIES, SITES CAQUETA, Colombia (CNN) Security forces on Sunday sifted through the rubble from a car bomb they suspect was planted by Colombia's largest guerrilla organization, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Ten people were killed and 38 were injured in the explosion in the northwest city of Medellin, while the south, a government envoy was meeting with rebel representatives in an unsuccessful mission to relaunch peace negotiations. The attack was the latest sign that FARC was fulfilling its pledge to bring its 35-year long war from the countryside to Colombia's cities. FARC wages a guerrilla campaign against the government of Colombia, but is no rag-tag army of leftists.

SELECT Top Models Celebrities Tourism Sexuality ... About US Visas HISTORY Pre-Columbian cultures existed in scattered pockets in the Andean region and on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Among the most outstanding were the Tayrona, Sinú, Muisca, Quimbaya, Tierradentro and San Agustín. Many of the tribes produced accomplished goldwork and pottery, and some left behind burial chambers and rock paintings which have helped anthropologists piece together their cultures. Alonso de Ojeda, a companion of Christopher Columbus, landed on the Guajira Peninsula in 1499. The wealth of the local Indians promulgated the myth of El Dorado, and the shores of present-day Colombia became the target of numerous expeditions. The Indians originally tolerated the arrival of the Spaniards but rebelled when the colonists tried to enslave them and confiscate their lands. Soon, a large part of what became Colombia had been conquered by the Spanish, and a number of towns, including Cartagena (founded in 1533), were prospering. In 1544, the country was incorporated into the viceroyalty of Peru, where it remained until 1739 when it became a part of New Granada (comprising the territories of what are today Colombia , Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama).

Chapter History
In the fall of 2000 a Grand Rapids chapter of Colombia Support Network was created by a group of concerned local citizens. For the first year good progress was made and the chapter was able to bring two Colombian speakers to Grand Rapids as well as presenting at various local events. After Sept. 11, 2001, the Grand Rapids CSN chapter, like many social justice movements around the country, saw a decrease in activity as members shifted focus to resisting the US military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. With the visit of Father Jaokim from Colombia in April 2004, there is renewed interest in again having an active Grand Rapids Chapter. In order to do this, the Grand Rapids chapter will be actively recruiting new people to get involved and to assume leadership roles within the organization. Media Mouse , a local alternative media collective, has agreed to help promote GR CSN and host this GR CSN page. This page will be updated regularly with information about Colombia as well as information about local organizing efforts and events concerning Colombia. For more information about Colombia and Grand Rapids CSN, contact Media Mouse

History and Government
History: The Republic of Colombia was formally established in 1855, four years after the abolition of slavery. Over the next 100 years, Colombian politics were dominated by the Conservative-Liberal feud, which often broke out into warfare. Periods of democratic government alternated with dictatorships. There were occasions, however, when the two parties were able to unite to see off a common threat. This occurred in 1970, when they joined forces to prevent a bid for power by the Alianza Nacional Popular (ANAPO), led by the former dictator, General Rojas. At a desperately close election in April 1970, which needed four recounts, Rojas was narrowly defeated by Dr Misael Pastrana Borrero, the candidate for the National Front alliance of Liberals and Conservatives. The 1970 election was a turning point in Colombia’s recent history. Disaffected members of ANAPO formed a guerrilla movement known as Movimiento 19 de Abril (M-19), which initiated a 15-year-long guerrilla campaign against the government. They were soon joined in insurrection by two other left-wing groups, Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC, Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces) and the

Instead of civilian-military conflict, Colombia has experienced conflict between dominant political parties, the Liberals and Conservatives. Both parties emerged around 1850 during the presidency of General José Hilario López; for the remainder of the century, Liberals and Conservatives clashed frequently over the government of the respective departments, the division of authority between the president and the legislature, and the position in society of the Roman Catholic Church. The López administration drafted a Liberal constitution that granted substantial autonomy to the provinces, reduced the power of the executive, and established a strict separation of church and state. The PL initially consisted of a heterogeneous coalition of golgotas (merchants supporting free trade), draconianos (artisans and manufacturers supporting protectionism), and smaller landowners. Conservatives, in turn, drew their support from large landowners and the Catholic clergy. Peasants tended to support the parties of their patróns , a pattern that continued well into the twentieth century and helped to explain the intensity of rural political conflict.
