May 27, 2003 From Colombian villages to the theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort, Florida, conservationists are working to save a tiny monkey from extinction in the wild. The endangered cotton-top tamarin ( Saguinus oedipus ), which lives only in northwestern Colombia, has been threatened by dwindling habitat. Now, a research team from the United States and Colombia has been taking some creative steps to protect it. Cotton-top tamarins have long been studied in captivity (thousands of them were exported to the United States for biomedical research before the animal was declared endangered in 1973), but "no one had done a lot of work with them in the wild," said biologist Anne Savage. She began working with captive tamarins in college, then switched focus to wild tamarins as a graduate student. The group works with Colombia's villagers to develop awareness of the tamarin's plight and create more sustainable living solutions that could help it and many other rainforest species. "Making the conservation of natural habitats and resources economically feasible for local communities will insure the survival of not only the cotton-top tamarin, but the native flora and fauna of Colombia," said Savage. "Our goal is to use the cotton-top tamarin as the flagship species for the conservation of Colombia's natural resources."

Background Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to be several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and illicit industries such as the drug trade and the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota continues to try to negotiate a settlement, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Economy - overview Colombia's economy suffered from weak domestic demand, austere government budgets, and a difficult security situation. A new president takes office in 2002 and will face economic challenges ranging from pension reform to reduction of unemployment. Two of Colombia's leading exports, oil and coffee, face an uncertain future; new exploration is needed to offset declining oil production, while coffee harvests and prices are depressed. Problems in public security are a concern for Colombian business leaders, who are calling for progress in the government's peace negotiations with insurgent groups. Colombia is looking for continued support from the international community to boost economic and peace prospects. GDP purchasing power parity - $255 billion (2001 est.) Colombia - GEOGRAPHY
Located in the northwest corner of the South American continent, Colombia encompasses an area of more than 1.1 million square kilometers. It is the only country in South America with both Caribbean (1,760 kilometers) and Pacific coastlines (1,448 kilometers). Colombia also has international borders with five Latin American nations: Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. There were no major outstanding international boundary problems between Colombia and its neighbors in the late 1980s. All of the borders had long been delineated, and most had been demarcated by surveys and the placement of markers, although tropical jungle terrain and hostile Indians had impeded survey operations in some areas along the borders with Venezuela and Brazil. Colombia and Venezuela did, however, dispute sovereignty over the seabed in the Golfo de Venezuela, an area of potential petroleum wealth. In addition to its mainland territory, Colombia possesses a number of small islands in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The combined areas of all these islands do not exceed sixtyfive square kilometers.

    GEOGRAPHY: Natural Regions
Colombia is made up of two major physical regions: the Andes, with its large valleys and basins in the west; and the broad lowlands, which extend over almost two-thirds of the country in the east. The population is concentrated in the valleys and basins of the mountain region, while the lowlands are sparsely inhabited. The physical structure of the mountain region and the direction of its main ranges and valleys are a dominant factor in the distribution of the population, with orientation toward the Caribbean (rather than the Pacific) coast, where most of the country's ports are located.
    The Andes
The mountain region consists of three ranges of the Andes: Cordillera Occidental, Cordillera Central, and Cordillera Oriental, all of which have a general south-north orientation. The Cordillera Oriental has a complex and varied structure. It consists of short, noncountinuous ridges that follow a north-south direction, with some ridges running nearly parallel. This is particularly so in the middle part of the range, from the vecinity of Bogota northward, where it reaches its maximum width of 140 miles. The Cordillera Oriental rises well above the snow line, and extensive areas are snow-covered the year around. Another feature of the Cordillera Oriental is a number of high basins, three of which are comparatively large, resembling intermont plateaus. The Capital

An extremely wide variety of crops is grown, depending on altitude, but coffee is by far the major crop and its price on the world market has affected Colombia's economic health. Among the commercial crops, coffee is grown between elevations of 3,000 and 6,000 ft (914 and 1,829 m); bananas, cotton, sugarcane, oil palm, and tobacco are grown at lower elevations. Between 6,000 and 10,000 ft (1,829 and 3,048 m) potatoes, beans, grains, and temperate zone fruit and vegetables are grown. Colombia is rich in minerals, including petroleum, natural gas, iron, nickel, coal, copper, gold, silver, platinum, and emeralds. The saltworks at ZipaquirA, near BogotA, are world famous. Hydroelectric potential was developed during the 1970s and 80s. The manufacturing sector of the economy has expanded greatly in recent decades, although it is heavily dependent on imported materials. Beverages and processed foods, textiles, clothing and footwear, metal products, cement, and chemicals are the chief manufactures. Tourism is also a sizable source of income.
