Types of Schools
The list is almost endless— colleges, universities, community colleges, private colleges, public colleges, vocational schools. What do they all mean and where do you begin? Once you know where you want to end up, then you have to find the right school to get you there. Here's some basic info to get you thinking.
Community and Junior Colleges
Community and junior colleges generally offer two-year associate degree programs. For students who decide to continue their studies in a four-year program, the courses usually transfer to four-year colleges. Community colleges offer specialized job training in certain areas, much like vocational schools. They're very affordable and prepare students to enter the work force immediately following graduation. And, it's usually easy to get in and easy to transfer into a four-year college or university.
Four-year Colleges and Universities
Four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's degrees in a variety fields of study. Most also offer graduate programs with opportunities to earn a master's degree, doctorate, or professional degree. The curriculum is usually broader than a two-year school.

Educational Outreach Elements
ITVS's Community Connections Project joined forces with Active Voice, National Issues Forums Institute, and Outreach Extensions to carry out an extensive community civic engagement campaign. This campaign involved people in constructive conversation at community forums, on the Web, and in classrooms key places where people turn to talk about immigration and what it means to be an American. An emphasis in this campaign was to develop resources, video modules, and trainings that support the long-term use of the series for education and awareness building after broadcast. Here is a description of each organization's outreach efforts: Resources from Active Voice
(Resources to support cross-ethnic coalition building, policy-focused screenings, and professional development for service providers, youth leaders, and faith-based and immigrant organizations)
  • Theme-based video modules excerpted from the series and focused on "Supporting Families," "Finding Community," and "Building Bridges" Module toolkits that include a discussion guide, resource list, inquiry tools, case studies, and workshop curriculum

All standards are laid down by the Ministry of Education in the form of regulations. These regulations are prepared by the social partners, then approved by the Ministry of Education. There is no regional level within the VET system, only the national and local level. In Denmark there are about 140 vocational colleges maintained by the public in the Danish VET system. More than 100 of these are technical and business colleges, the others include agricultural colleges and social and health care colleges

Local Colleges - Key Facts
  • Local colleges have 3.5 million LSC funded students and some 4 million in total. 120,000 14-16 year olds choose to study vocational courses at college. 701,000 16-18 year olds choose full time study in college, compared with only 345,000 in schools. While only 53% of young people have 5 good GCSEs or their equivalent at age 16, that figure rises to 76% at age 19, largely due to the help they receive at local colleges. While only 38% of 17 year olds achieve 2 A Levels or better, colleges deliver one third of these awards. 44% of all level 3 qualifications, both vocational and academic (A Levels, AVCEs, NVQs etc), are awarded in local colleges - the same as schools. 44% of students going on to Higher Education come from colleges which also directly deliver 11% of HE. There are some five 16 and 17 year olds on college vocational courses for every two on government training schemes such as Modern Apprenticeships, and your chance of gaining an NVQ in college is nearly twice as high as on an MA. 154,000 learners enrolled on a Skills for Life college course to improve their basic skills in 2002/03

Vocational A-levels harder, say colleges
Donald MacLeod
Thursday August 14, 2003

As a row over "easy versus hard" A-levels erupted between headteachers and the government's exams watchdog, further education colleges insisted that vocational A-levels were harder than standard academic A-levels. Two thirds of advanced VCEs and double award VCEs are taken in colleges in subjects including information technology, health and social care, and travel and tourism. Despite the government's efforts to give vocational subjects equality of esteem with academic courses, in practice many of the more competitive universities do not accept them as entry qualifications and they have yet to establish their credibility in the jobs market.
