By: AGNES DIGGS - Staff Writer Increasing numbers of students with disabilities are joining the ranks of those planning the transition from high school to colleges, universities, career and vocational schools. Their road to college is the same as everyone else's, with one difference: how they make the trip.
Laws on the books prohibit schools from discriminating against students with disabilities, but it's important that they and their families realize the rules for higher learning are a whole different ball game compared with elementary and high school. "The difference between high school and college is that they (students) need to take more responsibility," said Loretta Bohl, coordinator of Disabled Student Services at MiraCosta Community College. "We help them, but we need them to take that first step and walk through our door, make contact with us. Some parents want to do it without having the student involved, but we can't do it (that way). If the student is not engaged in the whole process, it doesn't work." Bohl said being part of the planning is an important step toward independence. "We want to teach them advocacy skills, because they're going to have to learn how to advocate for themselves anyway," she said. "So we take baby steps."

Increasing numbers of students with learning disabilities are enrolling in two and four-year colleges and universities. Since 1985, among first-time, full-time freshmen who reported having any disability, the percentage of those with learning disabilities doubled from 15 percent to 32 percent. Currently nearly a third of all freshmen with disabilities report having learning disabilities. Some of the most frequently asked questions of the HEATH staff are about students with learning disabilities who are preparing to make the transition from high school to college. In addition, HEATH staff are asked many questions by students with learning disabilities who plan to enroll in graduate school, including law school and medical school. Such questions indicate that students with learning disabilities can, and do have successful undergraduate experiences. High school students with learning disabilities who are considering going to college should be encouraged to pursue this goal. Students should be aware that colleges and universities are not all alike

Existing Policy
We aim to provide the widest possible access to our educational courses, and to ensure the fair and equal treatment of all our students. We seek, therefore, to remove any barriers resulting from disability, illness or any other specific need. Our goal is to give all students, including those with disabilities, equal opportunities to encounter our wide range of academic, social and cultural experiences. We try to meet needs and overcome difficulties, so that these no longer present any barrier to potential students. Admissions Policy We welcome applications from students with special needs. A declaration of disability will in no way disadvantage you in the application procedure. Students with a declared disability are encouraged to visit before applying to see what facilities are available. Tom Evans or Nerys Williams will be available to discuss individual needs, in particular any specific arrangements needed for access, study support, lectures, placements, assessments and examinations. We take into account the guidelines for best practices provided by SKILL, BDA, RNIB, RNID and the Wales Council for the Deaf.
