International Studies and Programming Study Abroad Program Vision Statement on Study Abroad Study abroad at Macalester College means both high academic performance and an acute awareness of diversity that is uniquely fostered by international experience. It enhances education in the liberal arts by engaging well prepared students in rigorous and stimulating learning experiences in a variety of countries outside the United States. Study abroad enables students to encounter foreign cultures through contact with faculty, students and the general public of the host country, and, in societies where the native language is not English, provides them with a useful and consciousness-expanding proficiency in a second language. Enrollment in off-campus study during the summer of 2004 and academic year 2004-05 involved 269 students on 118 programs in 45 countries, including 5 students on domestic study away in the United States. Using the national statistical methodology recommended by the Institute of International Education (IIE) for comparative purposes in determining level of off-campus study across U.S. colleges and universities (the number of study away participants divided by the number of students who received degrees in May 2005), the Macalester College study away participation rate was 60.6% for 2004-05.

I'm a first or second-year student. What should I be doing now to plan for study abroad?
First you should attend the Study Abroad Informational Meeting for new students held during Opening Week and the Study Abroad Fair, which is usually held in September. Then you should attend a Study Abroad First Step Meeting no later than the first semester of your sophomore year. These are small group meetings intended to help students get started with planning for study abroad. Please note that if you plan to major in the sciences, music or theater, it is often advisable to begin to take courses in your intended major during your first year, if you wish to go abroad. Check with your academic adviser about whether you need to begin taking courses in your intended major.
