Have you always dreamed of traveling to cool places, meeting lots of different people, and maybe picking up a language or two? No matter what country you live in, you can fly over the world's highest waterfalls in Venezuela, learn world trade in Japan, study in France, or take dancing lessons in Ghana. How? Join a study abroad program , where high school and college students live with a host family in a foreign country. Semester, summer, and year-long programs allow you to attend school, take intensive language courses, or perform community service in another country. Read on to learn more about study abroad programs. Why Study Abroad?
Besides the excitement of travel, one reason to study abroad is that you will experience new customs, holidays, foods, art, music, and politics firsthand. "Obviously, I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps more importantly was how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself. I learned this from the viewpoint of an active member of the community and my [host] family, not from the tourist's point of view," says Andrew, who studied in Poitiers, France. Another reason for studying abroad is that you'll gain self-confidence . Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of 10 million people and a huge change from her hometown of 35,000! Christina says she learned how to better stand up for herself and her beliefs and to express herself in another language. What could make you more confident than that?

"It doesn't take a special kind of person to study abroad, rather a desire to make the world that you live in a bigger place." S tephani Hess, Brazil, 2002 "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Why Study Abroad?
Studying abroad may be that defining moment in your education that will change your life. Nothing will be quite the same after you have studied abroad. Your perspectives will be global, your attitudes will be international and you will have memories that you will carry forever. Your resume will be more attractive, in some cases your language proficiency will be advanced, and you will have developed lifelong friendships. The largest misconception that prevents students from participating in study abroad is its perceived inaccessibility. Students who do study abroad are often amazed at how easy it was to put the whole thing together. Financial aid is available, every major field of study can partake, and study abroad is an experience available for every student. It's as easy as a working through a checklist.

Time abroad provides students with new political views
By Daniel Gilbert
October 12, 2004 in News
Brittin Romero, a third-year in the College studying in Rome, may not speak Italian, but has no problem reading the political writing on the wall. “Just going on the amount of graffiti I’ve seen on the streets of Rome denouncing Bush, I would say it is something that weighs heavily on the minds of Italians,” Romero said. “As for the students here, I feel most of them are planning to vote by absentee ballot, and have tried with some success to watch the debates.” Instead of reading about most of Europe’s virulently anti-Bush sentiments, Romero is one of 203 students studying abroad from the University this fall who has seen firsthand how foreign countries have responded to the American presidential race. Experiencing the election in foreign societies, in turn, has given Chicago students a new lens for understanding American democracy and society. The common issue weighing on locals in Europe, Asia and Latin America, say Chicago students studying there, is U.S.

Overseas study gives students fresh insight

While studying abroad in South Korea, a USC College religion major on his way home from class stops to listen to monks chanting at a Buddhist temple. Thousands of miles away in Costa Rica, a classmate majoring in environmental studies, waits for a bus to take him to class and watches a hummingbird skittishly dart about a garden filled with native flowers.
These sorts of experiences abroad are allowing College students the opportunity to apply their studies in new locales. Whether a biology major in Brisbane or an English major in London, study abroad enhances a student’s overall academic know-how and is quickly becoming an experience that few choose to do without.
In the past five years, more than 1,200 USC College students have studied abroad and the number of students interested in studying abroad increases each year. Available to students are more than 40 programs on six continents, all of which integrate local culture and customs with academic coursework.
“The type of student USC is attracting is looking for diverse experiences. They want to get all they can out of their undergraduate experience and studying abroad is a great opportunity to do so,” says Jessica Patton, a study abroad advisor in the university’s office of overseas study.
