21. Madras College Magazines: June 1933 Editorial
After forty years of work as Mathematical Master in Madras College, Mr. Carmichael Madras College has lost one of its most notable sons in the Very Rev.
http://www.madras.fife.sch.uk/archive/magazines/1933june/editorial.html
EDITORIAL Whether times be rough or smooth, nothing can delay the lapse of the years, and we are little more than three months from the Centenary of the opening of our College. Conditions have not bettered enough to warrant the resumption of active measures to increase the seven hundred pounds already gathered and lying at interest, but modifications of our original plan have been discussed by the Centenary Committee. The situation, moreover, is complicated by the impending onset of the Educational Endowments Commission, which is expected to tackle the Fife Endowments towards the end of this year. We are not bold enough to predict the issue: it may grieve us sorely, or, on the other hand, it may make it possible to acquire, equip and maintain ground and buildings for athletic purposes. After forty years of work as Mathematical Master in Madras College, Mr. Carmichael retired at the end of the second term, leaving in the tradition of the school a deposit of sound mathematical teaching and of kindly dealing that must have wrought on the minds and hearts of countless pupils to make them clearer thinkers and kindlier men and women. At a farewell dinner with the Staff and some other friends, he and his good lady were bidden godspeed with the most cordial wishes for a long and happy leisure. His successor, Dr. John McDonald, has been with us for some years. We know his worth, and we hope for great things from his labours not only in Mathematics but in the general life of the school. He has undertaken his new duties with the greatest goodwill from pupils and staff.

The First College Magazines
The first Queens' College magazine, which appeared in 1904, was entitled The Green Bore (no doubt a reference to the College colours and the silver boar's head badge of Richard III). It was edited and mostly written by a student named F W M Draper who was at Queens' from 1901-04 and later taught at Mill Hill. It would seem this publication was short lived and unfortunately no copies have survived in the College or University archives, so nothing is known of its form or content. The Green Bore clearly left a void, for early in the Lent Term 1905 the Chaplain of Queens', the Revd C T Wood (later Dean 1907-40) wrote to the President of the St Bernard Society, the College debating society, suggesting a College Magazine. The suggestion was so well-received that it was put to the vote and The Queens' Courier was born. Volume 1 No. 1 appeared on 15 March 1906 edited by a "somewhat reluctant committee" of one undergraduate from each year reinforced by a don (Mr A B Cook, later Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology) "to act as a check upon possible indiscretion or heedlessness". The first editorial hopes "that we shall supply, successfully, both the serious and the comic element so desired by a College citizen in a record of College life". "In entering upon a task like this we have many models before us to point out the way in which our halting feet should tread. But we hope that we shall not be dubbed ambitious when we say that our Pegasus does not quite approve of any of these oft traversed paths to fame. "

http://www.ecmaweb.org/about/history.html
A History of ECMA
Compiled by Jim Agneil, Kansas State University For decades, the organization and the magazines flourished (sometimes more so financially than journalistically). Until the 1970s, ads were plentiful because ECMA was the principal vehicle for recruitment advertising for large U.S. corporations interested in hiring new engineering graduates. During these golden years ECMA member publications consisted mainly of advertising interspersed with a few photos and rambling essays. Advertising revenue was such that ECMA itself prospered. In fact, individual magazines showed such high revenues that, in at least one case, the IRS became concerned that the college magazine had an unfair advantage over commercially published trade magazines. In the 1980s, computerized typesetting and subsequently publishing technology rapidly improved the quality of ECMA publications. Unfortunately, proliferating commercial magazines such as Graduating Engineer, Hispanic Engineer, and U.S. Black Engineer, greatly reduced ad revenues. ECMA members voted to end their relationship with LMB as an exclusive publisher's representative because of the declining number of ads, and several schools even ceased publication because of increasing printing expenses. ECMA tried affiliating with another advertising agency, but the relationship was terminated in 1993.

History of Editorial Projects in Education
In 1957, fifteen editors of university alumni magazines launched a bold experiment that would have a substantial and lasting impact on all of American education. Their experiment sought to serve higher education by speaking with one voice to their collective alumni bodies. In the era of Sputnik, they called their endeavor the "Moonshooter" project. Although unincorporated, they requested and received a $12,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to subsidize the research and writing of the report. Early in 1958, almost as an afterthought, they wrote to their fellow university editors across the country and invited them to join the project and purchase copies of the report to bind into their own college magazines. One hundred fifty colleges signed on. American Higher Education: 1958 , a 32-page report, reached almost a million college-educated Americans that April.

Professional research journals offer a variety of publishing opportunities to graduate students and researchers. Unfortunately, these opportunities are frequently not open to undergraduates. Our goal at California Engineer is to offer such publishing opportunities to undergraduate engineers from the University of California system. We strive to create a professional quality publication and to encourage UC students from all disciplines to submit articles on engineering-related topics to our magazine.

34. Portadown College

http://www.leicester.co.uk/pc/
www.pc56.co.uk - a website for Portadown College memorabilia For over 45 years I have kept a copy of a little school magazine called P.C. '56 . Hence the title of this website. I left the College in that year at the age of 14 as my family returned to England, but I have the happiest memories of my six years there, three at the Junior School on Killicomaine Road and three at the Senior School by the Bann Bridge. If you were at Portadown College in 1956 you may remember that magazine and you may well be interested in this website and the other bits and pieces here. The magazine title was probably something to do with the popular radio series of the time called PC 49. By 1959 the title of the school magazine had changed to the more prosaic Portadown College Magazine Easter 1959 If you read nothing else, read Adeline Clingan's "Retrospect" on page 31 of the 1959 Magazine. It sums up for me what Portadown College in the 1950s was all about - and, sadly, what I missed by leaving after Form 3A. Many thanks to Marian Chambers of Sydney (née Marian Mitchell) for lending me the 1959 Magazine and the Speech Day programmes for 1955, 56, 57 and 59. I believe these were originally the property of Nola Nixon. Thanks Nola for keeping them all this time! Many thanks also to Ivy Whysall (née Freeburne) for keeping her copy of the 1962 and 1966 Magazines these 40+ years and particularly for sending me the images of all the pages already scanned.

CNN's Gary Tuchman looks at the controversy over college rankings
Windows Media August 20, 1999

Web posted at: 8:59 p.m. EDT (0059 GMT)
From Correspondent Gary Tuchman PRINCETON, New Jersey (CNN) Last year, when U.S. News and World Report's well-known rankings of America's colleges and universities came out, there was joy at Princeton, which was tied for No. 1. But this year, those same rankings put Princeton tied for fourth and that has caused some grumbling. "There will be some number of people who believe that the ranking is legitimate statistically," said Justin Harmon, Princeton's communications director. "And it is not." While that may sound like sour grapes to some, the U.S. News and World Report rankings are being criticized from many corners.
