The Issues: Paying For College
INGLEWOOD, Calif., August 3, 2004
Honorio Franco says his financial aid package won't nearly cover tuition costs. (Photo: CBS)
Honorio Franco learned that despite his mother's income of only $18,000 a year as a maid, he would still have to pay more than $12,000 a year for school.
The Issues:

School Vouchers

Health Insurance

Outsourcing
Education Spending ... Global Warming CBS News Video: Watch This Series (CBS) CBS News continues an election-year series titled "What Does It Mean To You?" focused on where the presidential candidates stand on major issues and how a vote for one or the other candidate might affect average people's lives. In this report, CBS News Correspondent Sandra Hughes looks at what the candidates propose to do about rising college tuition costs. Working this summer at his high school alma mater in Inglewood, Calif., Honorio Franco is saving every dime. Several public universities accepted him but he opted for an expensive private school Northeastern University in Boston. "I never looked at cost because I didn't want that to influence my decision," said Franco.

124. Biology Education Review

http://yucca.uoregon.edu/wb/Newsletters/BER.html
PLEASE NOTE: Biology Education Review is no longer an active publication.
Electronic versions of back copies are still available at this site. Welcome to Biology Education Review!
This newsletter is intended to encourage communication and the sharing of ideas between college biology teachers who adhere to the following principles: That students need to understand scientific ways of thinking, the role of science in society, and the nature of scientific knowledge, in addition to fundamental concepts in biology That students need to have opportunities to make connections between what they already know, what they are learning, and issues that are important to them
That students need to be actively engaged in their own learning, including asking their own questions, constructing their own explanations, and communicating their ideas to others That teachers need to think critically about their teaching, treating it as an area of inquiry in which empirical evidence, sound theory, and frequent collaboration are just as important as in their disciplinary research. Biology Education Review was published quarterly by:

What do you think? Click HERE to take our College Cost Survey America's higher education system is facing a crisis. Decades of dramatically increasing costs, in both good economic times and bad, are threatening to push the dream of college out of reach for millions of students and families. Led by 21st Century Competitiveness Subcommittee Chairman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, Republicans on the Education & the Workforce Committee have pledged to hold colleges accountable for these dramatic increases to help keep college affordable. In the coming months, through reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, the Committee will work to add new sunshine and transparency to our nation's higher education system. Legislation will be offered to provide the consumers of higher education students and parents with accessible and easily-understandable information, allowing them to better exercise freedom in the marketplace of higher education. By empowering consumers, the Committee believes, America's higher education system will be more accountable to the students it exists to serve.
