The Transition to College
Whether you are beginning college directly after high school, are leaving a full-time job to pursue an education, or are working and attending college at the same time, you will face some adjustments during your first semester here. Students in two freshman level courses were asked to describe the transitional issues they faced in their first semest er and to give advice to incoming students. Here's a sample of what they had to say.
Top Ten Issues Identified by Students
(in order of importance)
  • Personal responsibility "In college you have freedom to do as you please...to go where you wish...to do as you wish. Unfortunately, this freedom is easily abused. The student carries 98% of the responsibility and control." Class attendance "As a college student, you will decide whether you want to go to class or not. Being absent will hurt you in the long run." Teacher attitudes "Your instructors will not hound you to do your work. It's entirely up to you."
"Get to know your teachers. If your teachers know you, it will be easier for them to look out for you and help you if you're having trouble."

With the Wild Rockies Field Institute , students learn how to think critically about environmental and social issues; connect with the landscape; and consider their relationship to both natural and human communities. All of our courses are taught while traveling under our own power in the backcountry, and college credit is offered through the University of Montana. Course areas range from Alaska to Mexico.
WRFI was founded in 1993 by several instructors at the University of Montana who felt that education about ecological processes and relationships, as well as land management policy and human relationships with the land, could be more deeply and honestly explored on site, in the field.
We invite you to join us for a different kind of academic adventure. Please choose from the options listed on the left to learn more about the Institute and the details of our courses. Safety/Improvement School Issues Article SCHOOL ISSUES ARTICLE Hazing: It's Not Just a College Problem Anymore! In 2000, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) accepted responsibility for the alcohol-related death of freshman Scott Krueger in a 1997 fraternity hazing ritual. In a letter to Krueger's family , MIT President Charles Vest wrote, "At a very personal level, I feel that we at MIT failed you and Scott." A recent study suggests that hazing isn't just a college problem anymore. Our high schools, it appears, also fail their students. Included: Tips to help schools prevent hazing. Any action taken or situation created intentionally ... to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol; paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips, or any other such activities carried on outside or inside of the confines of the chapter house; wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with fraternal law, ritual, or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution.

Bush Issues Call to Service at Michigan College
By Michael A. Fletcher Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, May 22, 2005; Page A04 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 21 Saying that the strength of the nation ultimately rests on the compassion of individuals, President Bush on Saturday urged the graduates of Calvin College to serve others by working in religious groups, civic organizations or government. Bush issued the call to service during the school's commencement, telling graduates that individual sacrifice makes a profound difference by helping to build a better society. "When you come together to serve something greater than yourself, you will energize your communities and help build a more just and compassionate America," he said.
President Bush talked about helping "build a more just and compassionate America" in a speech to graduates of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The College of Arms is the official repository of the coats of arms and pedigrees of English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth families and their descendants. Its records also include official copies of the records of Ulster King of Arms the originals of which remain in Dublin. The officers of the College, known as heralds, specialize in genealogical and heraldic work for their respective clients. Coats of arms have been and still are granted by Letters Patent from the senior heralds, the Kings of Arms. A right to arms can only be established by the registration in the official records of the College of Arms of a pedigree showing direct male line descent from an ancestor already appearing therein as entitled to arms, or by making application through the College of Arms for a grant of arms. Grants are made to corporations as well as to individuals. The College has now produced the first issue of its newsletter (details below).
