College Town Life
Featured College Towns College Town News Search Wooden barns, and American Main Streets have disappeared rapidly over the last 50 years. So too, the American college town (at least many of the walkable, pre-WWII, residential neighborhoods near campuses) as it was known in the mid-twentieth century and earlier is a vanishing cultural asset. With the rise of the automobile suburb and the expansion of universities, both physically and in numbers of students enrolled (who most commonly have been accommodated in off-campus housing), college neighborhoods as they often are thought of are in danger of disappearing. Unlike barns and Main Streets though, the waning of near-campus neighborhoods has received relatively little attention. Near-campus neighborhoods are visible reminders of our town and college-building heritage. For many people, they are what gives a college town its unique appeal. For some communities they even increase tourism. Encouraging some near-campus neighborhoods with a mix of residents can be a benefit for a college town in drawing new families and businesses. These earlier, walkable neighborhoods with a variety of housing types continue to be popular residential areas in college towns as more people recognize the unique rewards of older homes and walkable neighborhoods.

College Drinking Some college traditions are ageless: Eating pizza at midnight. Pulling all-nighters before a big test. But recent national reports about other "traditions" - guzzling cold beers with friends or getting so drunk you can barely find your dorm room - are being seriously examined for the long-term damage they cause to drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Residential community of campus activists who promote issues of justice and sustainability.
http://cgreen.conncoll.edu/EH/ehouse.html
The Connecticut College Earth House
The Connecticut College Earth House is a residential community of campus activists living in the former North Cottage. Formed in 1994 by six students (Erin Corcoran '95, Jens Hilke '96 Brooke Loder '95, Mark Lucey '95, Jake Marin '97, and Heather Montgomery '95), the Earth House acts as a vehicle for coordinating progressive student activism on campus. Contrary to popular belief, Earth House is not focused purely on environmental issues, but broadens its focus to incorporate and support all issues of justice and sustainability, as can be seen in the Earth House Vision Statement. Earth House also acts as a resource for campus activists and as a model for all of socially and environmentally conscious living. 1994-1995 was the trial year for Earth House and they were located in 360 Mohegan in two separate apartments. Following on the tremendous success of that year, the Residential Life Committee voted to grant Earth House permanent residence in North Cottage for the year. 1995 marked the establishment of the

That's what the New York Times said today in its editorial raising doubts about the wisdom of confirming John Roberts' nomination for Chief Justice. If the test were legal skill alone, Mr. Roberts would certainly pass. But the Senate and the American people have a right to know whether he would use his abilities to defend core rights and liberties , or to narrow them. There may be a debate on Capitol Hill on this point, but popular opinion is clear. In a New York Times/CBS News poll, 46 percent said it was "very important" for senators to know Mr. Roberts's "position on issues such as abortion and affirmative action ." Another 31 percent said it was "somewhat important." Only 13 percent said it was not important at all. Am I missing something?
