Harris, of Chicago, Illinois Email: mark_r_harris@yahoo.com Wednesday, June 12, 2002 Apparently, books about grooming your child for elite Western colleges are all the rage in China: This is a country where the hottest-selling book last year was "Harvard Girl," in which proud parents tell how they scientifically prepared their little darling, from age 0, to get into America's most prestigious university. That book's phenomenal success spawned close to a dozen quickie imitations, with titles like "Harvard Boy," "Cambridge Girl" (the British one), "Our Dumb Little Boy Goes to Cambridge," and "Tokyo University Boy." One brave author, Zhou Hong, is bucking the trend with his daring offering "I'm Mediocre, I'm Happy," but "the book's title...was enough in itself to horrify many Chinese for whom advanced education is a consuming goal."

The UDHR lays out 30 rights that ought to be honored for every human in every nation of the world. These include the right to freedom of thought and faith, the right to recognition as a person before the law, the right to a family and a nationality, and the right to work and education. The UMM First Year Seminar used the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a reading for the Fall 1999 semester, and sections 4 and 7 (John Bowers, instructor) wrote papers and created posters and Web sites about international human rights for the FYS Jamboree. page updated/reviewed 22 Aug 05 People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. - George Orwell I am therefore of the opinion that when a democratic people engages in a war after a long peace, it incurs much more risk of defeat than any other nation; but it ought not easily to be cast down by its reverses, for the chances of success for such an army are increased by the duration of the war. When a war has at length, by its long continuance, roused the whole community from their peaceful occupations and ruined their minor undertakings, the same passions that made them attach so much importance to the maintenance of peace will be turned to arms. War, after it has destroyed all modes of speculation, becomes itself the great and sole speculation, to which all the ardent and ambitious desires that equality engenders are exclusively directed. Hence it is that the selfsame democratic nations that are so reluctant to engage in hostilities sometimes perform prodigious achievements when once they have taken the field. Democracy in America , 1835-1839, Alexis de Tocqueville, section 3, chapter XXIV

Th.D.(honorary), Lund University, Sweden
Main Interests
Personality psychology (including theories of personality and methods of assessment); psychology of religion (history, theories, research methods, and philosophical issues); phenomenology of everyday experiences.
Research Interests
My published scholarly work is mainly in the psychology of religion, including my book, Psychology of Religion: Classic and Contemporary (2nd edition; Wiley, 1997). Current projects include the preparation of a collection of my essays on the psychology of religion for republication, the development of a psychology of the conservative mind, and a reassessment of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a remarkably popular assessment device inspired by the psychology of C. G. Jung.
Teaching Interests
In most of my courses, from the basic introductory course to my laboratory in personality assessment, I accent the wide range of perspectives that make up contemporary psychology, from the rigorously scientific approaches at one end of the spectrum to the qualitative-interpretive approaches at the other. My course in the psychology of religion likewise represents a diversity of views. But one of my courses is entirely given over to descriptive-interpretive perspectives: "Experiencing: The Phenomenology of Everyday Life" is a study of phenomenological psychology as it may be applied to a variety of everyday experiencesincluding reading and writing (the course is writing intensive), driving a car, and occupying a hotel roomas well as to experiences that are foreign to most of us, such as being autistic or totally paralyzed.

Health Considerations for the College-Bound
Q:
My son is getting ready to go to college this fall. He’s the first of our children to go off to college. What are some of the things we ought to consider before we drop him off at school?
A: This is can be a very stressful and exciting time for parents and the soon-to-be college student. There are clear medical issues that need to be addressed as well as others that pertain to independence and responsibility that, if dealt with now, can make the both the transition to college and the first few months a rewarding experience. One very basic issue is making sure that all immunizations are up to date. This includes a serious look at whether or not you want your young adult vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis. It seems as though every year, a small number of college students – who usually live in close quarters – contract this type of meningitis, leading to an occasional fatality. The vaccine provides reasonable protection against the most common strains of this potentially serious illness, with a low risk of vaccination side effects. I would recommend obtaining it. Tetanus vaccinations need updating every ten years and if that period of time has elapsed, a booster would be indicated. Make sure that you have proof of measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccination as the college may require that as a condition for admission.
