SEPTEMBER 21: PROPOSALS DUE FOR FEBRUARY 2006 CONFERENCE on learning-centered institutions A decade ago, Barr and Tagg challenged higher education to consider, "What would we do differently if we put learning at the center?" Since then, powerful forces have been prompting us to move from the traditional focus on teaching to a new commitment to student learning. While some institutions have responded to this call, many remain virtually unchanged. How far have we really come? How important are these concerns? And what will move us forward? We invite proposals for this interactive conference that share successes, highlight innovations, and address the challenges of transformational change.

At the University of Akron, however, WZIP-FM reached a worldwide audience by transmitting its music over the Internet at the same time it broadcast a traditional radio signal locally. At its peak, the station's Webcasts of hip-hop and dance music attracted up to 300 online listeners an hour in places as distant as the Middle East and Australia. Song requests from Jerusalem and Sydney were common. "It absolutely broke our hearts to pull the plug," says Thomas G. Beck, general manager of the station.
