Other College Issues: Ask The Dean Archives
Other College Issues Questions Answered! Here is a complete list of our Other College Issues questions and links to the complete answer. Browse here, or return to our Ask The Dean main page Re-Applying to College During Gap Year In a supplemental letter or essay, tell admission officials what your original plans were and why and how they've changed. Be as specific as possible, explaining why you now feel that their institution is the right choice for you. More Pros and Cons of Gap Year A gap year is a welcome break for many students but can also be frustrating to others. It may indeed be a way to recharge your battery or to explore activities near home or afar that you never had time to experience before. However, students with lofty gap-year plans have been known to end up zoned out in front of "Full House" reruns or steamed up behind a fry-o-lator at the local Mickey D's. More Finding Philosphy or History Internships College admission officials are often more impressed when a student pursues a passion independently than when he or she joins an organized program. So don't be afraid to strike out on your own. More Costs of College Transfer Sometimes there is no cost involved at all when a student switches colleges. Just because a student transfers, it doesn't necessarily mean that he or she will need extra time to graduate.

Abusive drinking by college students has caused the nation to examine ways we can avoid these kinds of senseless tragedies. Anheuser-Busch and its more than 600 distributors across the country, in partnership with retailers and educators, are working hard to address such issues on college campuses.
With abusive drinking at colleges on the decline and abstinence doubling since 1982, something is going right. But no one can ignore the abusive side of the curve. Abusive drinking at any age, on or off campus, is irresponsible and dangerous. It suggests risk behavior and it needs our continued attention and the attention of the academic and counseling section of our schools.

College Issues for Students with AD/HD This information and resource sheet will provide information on:
  • selecting the right college for a student with AD/HD
  • obtaining help at the college for a student with AD/HD
  • helpful interventions and accommodations for college students with AD/HD
Whether you are a recent high school graduate or an adult returning to college, the path from enrollment to graduation can often be daunting. This path may be especially challenging for those with AD/HD. This information and resource sheet provides assistance on handling the specific challenges faced at the post-secondary level by college students with AD/HD. To achieve success at this level, students with AD/HD must possess an understanding of AD/HD and how the condition uniquely affects them. This information and resource sheet also provides tools for achieving greater success and satisfaction at college. Choosing a College Choosing a college or university can be a complicated process for an individual with AD/HD. By law, all colleges and universities receiving any federal funding must provide "reasonable accomodations" for the student with AD/HD. There are important differences, however, in the supports available at various schools. Some schools have very minimal staffing to provide support services and only adhere to the "letter of the law" while other schools provide extensive support and encouragement to students with AD/HD. Finding a school that can offer the appropriate support usually takes careful research. While there are a few catalogs listing colleges with good supports for learning disabilities, no such guide yet exists for students with AD/HD.

This paper proposes the establishment of an African Virtual Community College (AVCC) which uses the power of information communications technologies to overcome the financial, physical and informational barriers preventing increased access to higher education in several African countries. AVCC will utilize new technologies as the central media of its educational and training programs. This paper outlines the assumptions underpinning the AVCC model, its components and its advantages over existing educational models.

Introduction
It has been said that education is the essential ingredient for producing self-sufficient citizens. Unfortunately, the truth of this statement is lost on millions of African students who have limited access to higher education. Without basic educational skills, individuals are severely handicapped in their search for a fulfilling life.
Higher Education in Africa
Higher (tertiary) education in Africa is confronted with several challenges. The challenges facing tertiary education in Africa are a complex combination of limited access, increasing costs, decreasing quality, limited choice of subjects and academic programs and inflexibility in course selection. In addition, there is a lack of adequate trained personnel and up-to-date educational resources. Given the rapid population growth rate in Africa those seeking access to education at all levels - primary, secondary, and tertiary - will increase over time. The traditional educational institutions in Africa will not be able to expand to accommodate the increasing number of students seeking access to higher education. This situation calls for the exploration of a complementary form of education for the continent.
