Grant Seeking Guide
Introduction

How We Can Help

How To Proceed
Introduction
Three different categories of grant seeking exist at Westmont. One category encompasses those grants that are actively pursued by the Office of Campus Advancement (OCA), a second category includes those grants that are sought through a joint effort between OCA and one or more academic departments, and a third category includes grants sought by individual faculty members or by a specific academic department.
Each of the above-mentioned grant seeking categories, OCA Grant Seeking, Shared Grant Seeking, and Faculty and Departmental Grant Seeking, is important to the mission of the college. The manner in which grants are sought and the person(s) to whom the grant-seeking task is given distinguishes one type of grant seeking from another. The three different areas of grant seeking and the types of grants that are pursued in each area are outlined in the Institutional Priorities Chart . The following is an attempt to clarify the unique grant seeking approaches required in each category.
  • OCA Grant Seeking
Westmont's Office of College Advancement exists to give oversight and coordination to the college's fund raising efforts. OCA's fund raising activities are focused on garnering financial resources to support the college's annual and long-term funding priorities. Within OCA, Westmont's Office of Foundation and Corporate Relations (OFCR) is charged with coordinating all campus fund raising efforts with foundations and corporations. The primary responsibility of the OFCR however, is to identify, cultivate and solicit foundations and corporations for what have been defined by the President, in collaboration with the trustees of the college, as the funding priorities for that fiscal year. These priorities include, but are not limited to, the operational, capital and endowment priorities of Westmont.

You are here: Home Grants Grants and Other Funding Sources This month I am focusing on the Top 10 Corporate Foundations and the Top 10 Private Foundations as ranked by their total giving. (I have arranged them in alphabetical order, and left off three that only allow requests in the Health programmatic area). These foundations donated over 3 BILLION DOLLARS last year to non-profit organizations. There is a lot of money out there for you to use to help improve your schools and help your children. Bank of America Foundation places special emphasis on providing educational opportunities for young children so they will be ready to learn and achieve when they begin school. However, they do not consider funding requests from K-12 schools, so you will have to partner with a non-profit organization in order to receive funds. Remember that the Bank is now all over the country, so send a grant letter to the Manager of your local BofA branch. You may submit proposals at any time. Ford Foundation seeks to enhance educational opportunity, especially for low-income and chronically disadvantaged groups. They want you to write a brief letter of inquiry about your project before you write a full proposal. Applications are considered year-round.

Grant Support for Faculty, Staff, and Students
The Director of Foundation Relations and Government Grants helps everyone at Lake Forest College to cultivate and maintain relationships with sources of external support (including state and Federal government) for projects consistent with the mission and priorities of the College. One of our most important activities is to support faculty members seeking external funding for research, curriculum development, pedagogical and other professional development projects. We work closely with the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty to do so. We can assist you to:
  • research potential funding sources discuss proposal ideas design projects draft proposals draft budgets (with the Controller’s help) complete forms and assemble final proposals
In general, we strive to make the submission process easier and less confusing, while helping you to create a more competitive proposal. We also subscribe to the Grants Advisor PLUS newsletter and IRIS, the Illinois Researcher Information System, which will help match a faculty member's research interests with potential funding programs. These resources are accessible online from any on-campus computer.

Lumina Foundation announces grants
INDIANAPOLIS Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation for Education has announced 11 grants totaling $1.25 million to expand college access and student success nationwide. The grants were approved in the first quarter of 2004.
“Our grants in the first quarter focused on policies and programs affecting student access and success, with special emphasis on low-income students, adult learners and students of color,” said Martha D. Lamkin, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation. “The Foundation continues to address the multiple barriers that impede access to and success in postsecondary education among traditionally underserved groups.”
Grants approved by Lumina Foundation in the first quarter of 2004 are listed below, grouped by the Foundation’s major priorities.
Access
Many financial and nonfinancial factors inhibit college access. The following grants address some of these barriers:

Establishing A Scholarship Grants-in-Aid, Merit Scholarships and Awards at BCC T he Broome Community College Foundation proudly offers grants-in-aid to supplement federal and state aid, merit scholarships, and awards to Broome Community College students. Currently because of the generosity of many donors, including community people, businesses, organizations, foundations, faculty, staff and alumni over $400,000 is made available each year to aid and recognize BCC students through the Foundation's grant and scholarship program. Approximately 200 merit scholarships and nearly 450 grants-in-aid are awarded annually.
Please see below for donor information. Click here for BCC students.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
A merit scholarship not only assures a student of public recognition for being outstanding, but also is tremendously helpful in assisting a student to cover costs that non-competitive awards (such as New York State Tuition Assistance or Federal Pell Grants) do not cover. These awards are also valuable because they may reduce the student's reliance on loans.
APPLICATION: Students needing financial assistance to continue their education at BCC and all students considered for scholarships with a need component are required to fill out and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is processed by an agency associated with the U.S. Department of Education, and eligibility information is then sent to BCC's Office of Financial Aid (OFA). With this information the OFA can prepare a financial aid package for the coming year, taking into account the student's cost of attending as well as his/her expected family contribution. Most grants-in-aid (that is, need-based grants) over and above TAP and Pell are awarded to eligible students based on the award criteria in March and April. These funds help fill the gap of unmet need, and are depleted rapidly once selection begins. Students are encouraged to apply for aid early.

If you are a student looking for information on financial aid, the very first thing you should do is speak to the financial aid office at the institution you plan to attend. (For a list of colleges and universities with financial aid offices on the World Wide Web, see FinAid's Financial Aid Offices Web Page ). Grants and loans are available from the federal government as well. Most colleges and universities will require you to apply for federal funding first before they consider you for scholarship support. We have selected a few of the most important print and electronic resources for you to begin your search beyond the institution you are attending. Because most private foundations make grants only to incorporated nonprofit organizations, individual grantseekers must follow a different funding path than organizations with tax-exempt status. Some private foundations currently offer scholarships and fellowships, and most have highly specific criteria. It is up to you to determine which funders might be interested in providing you with financial support. Our libraries maintain a limited collection of other publishers' scholarship materials, primarily those that list foundation-sponsored grants and awards. For access to a more complete collection of college guides and scholarship directories, as well as a good collection of career and vocational guidance materials, you should visit your local public library or your school's financial aid office.
