"With this Kresge grant, Meredith's students will have experiences with scientific instrumentation and equipment that are generally not available to undergraduate students – it will set them apart from others in quality experiences," said Rosalind Reichard, Meredith vice president for academic affairs. "This recognition by Kresge of the quality of our institution should provide great momentum for our fund-raising efforts." Of the $300,000 Kresge Science Initiative grant, $150,000 will help support the purchase of critically needed science equipment, including a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR), a gas chromatograph/ mass spectrometer (GC/MS), and a scanning electron microscope, which will be used in labs in the college's new 80,000 sq- ft. Science and Mathematics Building. In order to receive the other half of the grant, $150,000, The Kresge Foundation has challenged Meredith to raise an additional $600,000 by April 1, 2004, from new private gifts and grants to help create a $750,000 endowment fund for scientific equipment. Overall, the Kresge Science Initiative at Meredith College will support Meredith in raising $1.2 million toward equipment and endowment needs in the sciences.

and Corporate Relations
The Foundation and Corporate Relations team forms part of Amherst's Office of Development and works to support the College's Advancement effort. We are responsible primarily for seeking major grants from national foundations and corporations in support of broad institutional programs and initiatives. Some examples of such projects might include a curriculum development initiative, the construction or renovation of a campus building, programs serving the needs of Amherst students or faculty, or the purchase of major equipment to enhance teaching and research at the College.
We also work collaboratively with the Dean of the Faculty's Office to assist faculty seeking grants to support their research. This Website provides links to comprehensive funding opportunity databases, to some of the most commonly sought funding agencies and grant competitions, and advice on proposal writing, as well as information about the College's policies concerning external grant applications. Our staff can also provide constructive comments on draft grant proposals given a reasonable amount of notice, and can offer advice on putting together your project budget.

Baker-Berry Library and the Starr Instructional Center Generous support from both foundation and individual donors, among them the George F. Baker Trust, the Berry Family Foundation, the Carson Family Charitable Trust, and the Starr Foundation, made possible the renovation of the Baker Library and the construction of the adjacent Berry Library . Construction was completed in 2002. The resulting Baker-Berry Library will allow the college to house collections of nearly twice the current size. Berry was designed with digital resources and online learning in mind as well. It is now home to Academic Computing, which assists faculty in the use of technology for teaching. The Starr Instructional Center, on the second floor of Berry, is a state-of-the-art instructional facility with 20 student workstations and an instructor's workstation with projection capability. The Center is used by faculty for regular classes and by librarians for bibliographic instruction, as well as for staff training by various campus departments.

The sources listed below offer a wealth of information about various funding agencies that serve both individuals and institutions. These sources list eligibility requirements, financial background on individual funding agencies, deadline dates, names and addresses, and much more. Most grant directories have more than one index; for example, an institution index, a geographical index, a sponsor or donor index, and a subject index. Sometimes it is helpful to use more than one index when choosing the foundation or agency that is most appropriate for your needs. NOTE: The abbreviation "ref" in a call number indicates that a book is in the reference collection, and "Gov Doc" that it is in Government Publications.

INTERNET RESOURCES
Grants and foundations
by Hilary Sternberg May 2003
Vol. 58, No. 5 The Internet encompasses an exciting galaxy of foundation information and a variety of funding resources for both the neophyte and the experienced grant researcher. Foundation sites contain keys to programmatic giving, geographic focus, range of grant awards, program and support limitations. Additional information provides networking opportunities with colleagues, grant-writing structure and methodology, and access to professional literature. Many associations and government agencies, as well as corporate, private, and community foundations maintain a Web presence on the Internet. Of course, with the ever-changing nature of the Internet no article could provide a permanently comprehensive list of resources. Be aware that some sites with multiple points of access will have overlapping information and links. The following selected sites are intended to provide an introduction to the subject of grants and foundations. Explore the sites, peruse an e-journal, and enjoy surfing the links.
