Four years of college costs tens of thousands of dollars, and it is increasingly easy to break into the hundreds-of-thousands range, especially for advanced degrees. Parents, you've probably wondered just how you can manage to send your child to the college or university that he or she has dreamed about and earned the right to attend. Photo courtesy Duke Photography We all hear horror stories about how much college costs now and even worse how much it will cost in 10 or 20 years. Regardless of what you've heard, it's not too late to find a way to make paying for college manageable not easy, but manageable. Paying for college is a family affair parents and students work together to make college affordable. Obviously, the earlier you start, the easier it will be. However, it's never too late to make a difference.

Whether you're the parent of a college bound student or the student yourself, understanding the FAFSA and how the financial aid system works is critical. Failure to understand the FAFSA and how the system works can cause you to lose thousands and thousands of dollars in financial aid. There is so much confusion, misunderstanding and misinformation surrounding the FAFSA and the financial aid process that some families don't even complete the FAFSA form or apply for financial aid. Many families incorrectly assume if they own a home or have a six-figure income they won't qualify for financial aid.

The Committee on Financial Aid extends its condolences to students and families affected by Hurricane Katrina, and is ready to assist in whatever way possible. We encourage those with concerns to contact us at (617) 495-1581. For more detailed information about Harvard University’s assistance efforts, please see letters from both President Summers and Dean Kirby RECENT INITIATIVES:
WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE… Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers announced in February 2004 a major new initiative designed to encourage talented students from families of low and moderate income to attend Harvard College. While the new initiative has four major components, including recruitment, admissions, and a summer academic program designed to prepare talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds for college, the financial aid component increases aid for students from low and moderate income families. Beginning with the 2004-05 year, parents in families with incomes of less than $40,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of attending Harvard for their children. In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions expected of families with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000.

Financial Aid Information for Undergraduate Students
When you apply to Otterbein College, a review of your application helps to determine eligibility for academic, endowed and special talent-based scholarships, known as Merit-based aid. There are three types of financial aid: merit-based aid, such as scholarships and talent awards; need-based aid, such as grants; and entitlements, like the Ohio Choice Grant. Need-based aid is awarded on the basis of needs analysis system information provided by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This information is used to determine the difference between the cost of your education and the amount of support you and your family can reasonably be expected to provide, known as financial need. Click here to file the FAFSA online. The Otterbein College code is #003110.
